[5019] Robert left Orkney and went to Normandy. Apparently he accompanied William the Conqueror to England, for the Encyclopaedia Britannica (1956, 4:280) states: "The first Robert de Brus, a follower of William the Conqueror, was rewarded by the gift of many manors, chiefly in Yorkshire, of which Skelton was the principal." "The Bruce Journal," Vol. 1, No. 4, p. 47, credits him with building the castle of la Brusse in Normandy at Brix. For ancestry, see "Book of Bruce; ancestors and descendants of King Robert of Scotland. Being an historical and genealogical survey of the kingly and noble Scottish house of Bruce and a full account of its principal collateral families. With special reference to the Bruces of Clackmannan, Cultmalindie, Caithness, and the Shetland Islands, and their American descendants" Lyman Horace Weeks (New York: The Americana Society, 1907). http://www.oocities.org/helenehaw/Bruce.html offers: "Name origin: From De Bruys, from Bruy or Bruys, a place in Normandy, where the family originated. De Bruys fought at the Battle of Hasting; from this ancestor King Robert Bruce was descended."
