[39313] "Altoona Tribune [Altoona, PA], 28 March 1917," p. 10: "Mrs. Elizabeth Greer, aged 87, one of the oldest and best known women of Altoona, died suddenly yesterday morning at 8.30 o'clock, of diseases Incident to advanced age, at the home of her son, Charles A. Greer, 1120 Fifteenth avenue. Mrs. Greer was found unconscious on her bedroom floor at 7.30 o'clock. A physician was summoned hut the aged lady succumbed without being revived. She was evidently stricken while dressing. She had predicted the manner of her demise at noon on Monday, telling her family that she would be discovered on the floor some time. Her mother had predicted her death to the day that she passed away. Mrs. Greer was the daughter of Wilson and Rebecca Baird, and was born July 14, 1829, at Academia. Juniata county, where she resided until Christmas, 1849, when she wedded the late Adam J. Greer, a newspaper publisher at Mifflintown. The couple moved to this city in 1872, when Mr. Greer became editor of the Tribune. Her husband died August 26, 1890, and since then, Mrs. Greer resided chiefly with her son. At the age of 17 she joined the Methodist Episcopal church at Spruce Creek, Juniata county, and she was always an ardent Methodist. She was a member of the First church, this city, and attended services regularly until Thanksgiving Day 1915, when she fell and fractured her left leg, between the knee and ankle. She was in good health despite several falls she suffered within the last year. Her friends were legion and she possessed a wonderful memory. Her sight became affected lately and she could not see to read. Mrs. Greer is survived by one son, with whom she made her home; a daughter, Mrs. Matilda Caldwell, of Ottumwa, la.; a sister, Mrs. Mary Leigh, and two brothers, Wilson and George Baird, all of Highland, Kans. Six grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren also survive."
