He was born July 7, 1904, at Winter Harbor, the son of Joseph and Annie (McKay) Gerrish. Alton graduated from Winter Harbor High School in 1923. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard for three years on board the U.S. CGC Dix. In 1933, Alton began working at the Winter Harbor Post Office and became post master in 1942, retiring in 1962. He and his wife, Mary, were members of the Unionville Church of God and had attended the South Gouldsboro Church for many years. He was a member and a past master of the Winter Harbor Lodge No. 192 AF & AM for more than 69 years. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, (June 26, 1930), Mary of Winter Harbor; one son, Joseph Maurice Gerrish of Winter Harbor; one daughter, Janet Marie (Gerrish) Buffett of Sunapee, N.H.; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, three sisters, Cora Bell Foster of Utah, Marie Clark and Adelaide Wakefield, both of Winter Harbor; several nieces and nephews. Alton was predeceased by a grandson, Russel Alton Gerrish; a brother, Harold F. Gerrish; and a sister, Ina Bean."
