English, 92, of 305 Second St., Legion Acres, Pine Grove, died Sunday in the Broad Mountain Nursing Home, Frackville. A native and long time highly respected resident of Donaldson, he was a son of the late Thomas and Anna Morgan English. He was a retired miner. Mr. English was the oldest member of Salem United Church of Christ, Donaldson. His wife, the former Elsie Moyer died in April 1958, and a daughter, Pauline G. English, died in December 1964. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Mildred Bernd, with whom he made his home in Pine Grove; two grandsons, Lt. Col. David Bernd, Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Lt. Col. Ronald Bernd, Rome, N.Y.; and five great-grandchildren. His funeral was held Wednesday afternoon, with services in the Snyder Funeral Home conducted by his pastor, the Rev. George B. Carvell of Tremont. Interment was in the Reformed Church Cemetery, Tremont."

Documentation is needed. Ancestry.com offers: "Porter Name Meaning - English and Scottish: occupational name for the gatekeeper of a walled town or city, or the doorkeeper of a great house, castle, or monastery, from Middle English porter 'doorkeeper', 'gatekeeper' (Old French portier). The office often came with accommodation, lands, and other privileges for the bearer, and in some cases was hereditary, especially in the case of a royal castle. [14656] Horace graduated in 1869 from Grinnell College. He was business manager of the college from 1887 until his retirement in 1905, and was very active in municipal affairs. He served on the city council for several terms and was instrumental in the building of the city water works. Horace was son of Alden B. Robbins, a member of the famed "Iowa Band" that started the college. Horace was pastor of the Congregational Church at Postville, IA from '78 to '80 and quit the ministry on account of his throat which was not strong enough to stand the constant preaching. Horace m. his classmate, Abbie Whitcomb.

His wife, Mercy _____, m. (2) John Steele of Farmington, CT. The information in this database for Richard, his wife and ancestry is from the LDS Church's Ancestral File and is not verified. Find A Grave Memorial 40079770 offers: "His name is on the Founders Monument as an original proprietor who received land "by the courtesie of the town". His homelot was on the east side of the road to the Cow Pasture (North Main Street) and was bounded on the north by the Cow Posture itself. He signed the agreement for planting Norwalk on June 19, 1650 and was a first planter at Norwalk. (Families of Early Hartford, Connecticut, p. 501). According to "Four American Ancestries: White, Griggs, Cowles..." by Peter H. Judd, p. 908: Richard Seymour was baptized Jan. 27, 1604/5 at Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, England, son of Elizabeth Waller and Robert Seymour, and it was here that he married Mercy Ruscoe, daughter of Roger & Sarah Ruscoe of Sawbridgeworth, Eng. on April 18, 1631. He died between July 29, 1655 (date of will) and Oct. 10, 1655 (date of inventory) at Norwalk, Conn. Note: this conflicts with the death date given in "Families of Early Hartford" which was Nov. 1655.. In Norwalk his home lot was opposite the meeting house and Parade Ground in 1652 and was elected selectman of Norwalk on March 29, 1655. In his will written July 29, 1655, he was described as "very week & sike". After his death, Mercy married John Steele of Hartford on Nov. 20, 1655. He is not buried in the Ancient Burying Ground in Hartford. The place of his burial is unknown, but probably somewhere in Norwalk. This is a Cenotaph."
