Joshua Pratt (?) (b. Abt. 1593, d. October 1, 1656)
Joshua Pratt (?) (son of Henry Pratt
Notes for Joshua Pratt (?):
Joshua Pratt According to page 2 of "The Pratt Memorial" in Yale's Sterling Library (Bcp. 261), by the Rev. Stillman Pratt of Middleboro, Massachusetts, a claim can be made that "Joshua Pratt, supposed to be the brother of Phineas, came from England to Plymouth on the ship Ann, a few years after the Mayflower (1623).He was one of the surveyors who laid off the village of Plymouth into lots, receiving as his compensation for his services a peck of corn per day.His descendents may be found in the Old Colony, Sudbury, Shutesbury, and other places. This family is remarkable for its longevity.Ephraim Pratt of Shutesbury, lived, according to the authority of Dr. Dwight (president of Yale), to the advanced age of 116." (See Barlow's comments on Ephraim's longevity.)
This is the only connection found thusfar (2002) between Joshua Pratt and a possible descendent Ephraim (who is in our line).
There were certainly two Pratt brothers, Phineas and Joshua, in the early days of the Plymouth Colony.
They are sometimes played by costumed role-players at Plymouth Plantation. No record has been found either of their ancestry in England or of their descendents. It is possible that Thomas Pratt was the son of Joshua Pratt - but evidence is limited now.
Mormon data (submission search 973512-080910000154, Pedigree Resource File - Compact Disc #18, Pin #901931and #902308; submitted by Lori Deland, 3461 SW 2nd Ave., Gainesville, Florida, 32607) indicates that Joshua Pratt was born in 1593 in England, the son of Henry Pratt (born about 1565).He married Bathsheba Fay in 1630 in Plymouth, Massachuetts.Other information submitted by Lori Deland, indicates that Bathsheba was born in Boxford, Suffolk, England on January 1, 1592/93, married Joshua in Plymouth, MA in 1630 and died in 1673 in Plymouth (and was buried in Plymouth on August 29, 1667 - which is a backward stretch of the imagination).A MormonIGI Individual Record (no documentation numbers) for Thomas Pratt identifies his parents as Joshua Pratt and Bathsheba Fay, cites his marriage in 1655 to Susanna, and gives as his death date 1692 (the date of our Thomas Pratt).Lori Deland, on Compact Disc #18, Pin #902310, cites the birth of Thomas Pratt both in Plymouth in 1632 and in England "about 1636" (which would be difficult for the information we have given earlier about him in Watertown in 1647), goes on to identify Joshua and Bathsheba as his parents, cites his marriage about 1655 to Susannah Gleason (Disc #18, Pin #902296) in Watertown, Massachusetts, and his death on September 26, 1692 in Sherborn, Middlesex, MA. There are many other references in Morman records to Joshua, Bathsheba, and Thomas, varying widely in details.I am at present (February 6, 2004) unable to sort them out or to verify any of them - but they are interesting. Some indicate that Thomas (no parents cited) was born in Weymouth, MA in 1626, and in 1652married Susannah _________, born in Framingham or Weymouth in 1634.Yet another has Thomas born in 1630 in Weymouth and married to Susanna Gleason in 1655 in Norfolk, MA.
Other Mormon data (a Family Group Record) indicates that Joshua was born in England in 1593, married "Mrs Bathsheba Pratt" in 1630 in Plymouth, and had a son Thomas born in 1632 in Plymouth.Joshua's parents are listed as John Pratt and "Mrs. Joshua Pratt".More frequently his parents are listed as Henry Pratt and "Mrs. Joshua Pratt".Phineas Pratt has the same pedigree as Joshua and was born in 1590 and died in Charleston, Massachusetts on April 19, 1680.Phineas may have married Mary Priest, the daughter of Gregory Priest of the Mayflower; she was born in Leiden, Holland, while the Dissenters were in residence there.
