[15725] He was an American diplomat and editor and educated at Harvard University. He was admitted to the bar in 1829. Adams served for five years in the Massachusetts legislature as a member of the Whig party. In 1858 and again in 1860, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Massachusetts as a member of the Republican party. In 1861 he was appointed minister to Great Britain by Abraham Lincoln. His skillful handling of this position during the American Civil War (1861-65), when the British government rendered aid to the Confederacy, is an outstanding chapter in the history of American diplomacy. In the so-called Trent affair, the first major crisis in Anglo-American relations during the war, his calm and tact were instrumental in averting hostilities between the two nations. Although he failed to prevent the sailing of the Alabama, a raider built in Great Britain for the Confederacy, his efforts with the British government later resulted in the detention of other Confederate vessels. He resigned as minister to Great Britain in 1868. In 1871 he became a member of the Alabama claims tribunal. He edited the Life and Works of John Adams (10 vol., 1850-56), the Memoirs of John Quincy Adams (12 vol., 1874-77), and the Familiar Letters of John Adams and His Wife, Abigail (2 vol., 1876).

"Ellsworth American [Ellsworth, Maine], 28 September 2020": "Frank Warren Higgins Sr., 73, of Mariaville passed away on Sept. 24, 2020, at his home, surrounded by family after a courageous battle with cancer. Frank was born on Dec. 31, 1946, in Bangor, to the late Roscoe and Olive Higgins. He was raised in East Providence, R.I.
In 1966, he joined the United State Marine Corps, was assigned to the 3rd Marine Division and deployed to Vietnam. Frank was seriously wounded in 1967, requiring amputation of his legs. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star and honorably retired from the Marine Corps in 1968. That same year, Frank married Nola Marie Robertson in Rhode Island. A few years after marrying, they moved to Ellsworth to raise their four children. Frank enjoyed the outdoors and hunting. Most days he would be found working in his shop. Franks artistic talent and welding skills forged his passion into Bent & Twisted Design. He took great pride in his work that was displayed by many family members, friends and businesses. Above all else, Frank loved spending time with his family usually by hosting a cookout or holiday meal. A stoic man, Frank never let his disability define who he was. He inspired his family and those around him to never give up and keep moving forward. Frank was always willing to help friends and family however he could. He was a hero in every sense of the word. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Nola, children Frank Higgins Jr., Jamie Higgins, Rebecca Thomas and her husband, David, grandson Kolby Higgins, brother Roscoe Higgins, sisters Lorrie Higgins and Joann Gillett, nieces Shannon, Jenny and Sadie, nephews Keith and Jesse, good friends Mike Honey and the Franco family. He was predeceased by his son Daniel Joseph Higgins."
