[51042] "The Ellsworth American [Ellsworth, Maine], 17 June 2013": "Salisbury Cove amd Bonita Springs, FL - Leonard 'Lenny' Devereaux Perkins, 88, died June 14, 2013, at his home in Maine surrounded by his loving family. He was born Feb. 14, 1925, in Penobscot the son of Harold and Gladys (Devereaux) Perkins. {gallery}perkins{/gallery} Leonard attended elementary school in Brewer and high school in Bangor. Leonard enlisted in the Army/Air Force in 1943 and was stationed at Nak Nek Alaska until 1946. While in the armed forces, he trained in the food service. This was brought on by his experience as a child helping his mother with the meals at the Page House, Bangor. From 1950 to 1960, Leonard was part owner of Danas Food Shop, Presque Isle. He often mentioned not having a day off for those 10 years as he had to oversee all of the shifts and help with the food preparation. In 1960 he became the chef at the Oronoka Restaurant, Orono, where he stayed for five years. During the summer season from 1965 to 1980, Leonard was the chef at the Bar Harbor Inn in Bar Harbor. In the winter he worked at the University of Maine as a chef at Kappa Sigma Fraternity, Phi Eta Fraternity and Pi Beta Phi Sorority. Leonard was greatly respected and his students appreciated his food preparation and fatherly advice. Upon retirement Leonard and his wife, Martha, spent many hours making pies at their home in Salisbury Cove. 'Perkins Pies' was a business where friendliness, love and perfection went into every pie. The pies were made 100 percent from scratch and Leonard was very proud of that fact, as were his customers. Leonard was known by his family and friends for his great sense of humor, his quiet ways, his kindness toward others and his great skill in the culinary arts field. Baking bread for his grandchildren brought him great joy. He loved history, hunting, walking in the woods, swimming, gardening and raising farm animals, especially pigs, and his winters in Florida, where he did a lot of cooking for his friends. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 46 years, Martha (Rhodes) Perkins; four daughters, Loreta Hake and husband, Sam, of Missouri, Romona Perkins of Nevada, Katherine Perkins and fiancé, Robert Howard of Bucksport and Holly Perkins and partner, Glenn Megquier, of Bar Harbor; a sister, Madeline Horton of Massachusetts; six grand- daughters, Lorii Fowler and Christii Maquillan and husband, Robbie, Jessica Perkins, Kaycee Perkins, Kassidy and Julia Bate, Presley Wilkinson; two great-granddaughters, Charity Wilson and husband, Aaron and Samantha Maquillan; and great-great-grandson, Elliot Wilson. Leonard was predeceased by his parents; three sisters, Catherine Whitmore, Laura Martin, Betty Pomeroy; and his beloved son, Douglas. The Perkins family would like to thank the Hancock County HomeCare and Hospice for their kindness, respect and care for Leonard over the past months. We also wish to thank our granddaughters, Christii Maquillan, RN of New Hope Hospice and Jessica Perkins for the overwhelming love and caring for their grandfather. A big thank-you to Robbie Maquillan for Lens weekly gallon of Houlton Farm chocolate milk. It became the only thing that Len wanted to drink."
