[14636] "Springfield Reporter [Springfied, VT], 22 May 1914," p. 1: "The following from a Boston paper of yesterday will be of interest to the friends and acquaintances of Mr. Whitcomb. His last visit to Springfield was two years ago. William Wirt Whitcomb died this morning in Brookline. He was born in Dorchester, Sept. 10, 1833, and was the son of Samuel Whitcomb, Jr., and Mary Symond (Mollett) Whitcomb. The family moved to Springfield, Vt., when he was about three years old. At 16 years of age he went into the woolen mill at Cavendish, Vt., and at 18 he came to Boston and went into business, as a clerk, with Anderson, Sargent & Co. Later he became a member of the firm of Field, Thayer & Whitcomb, wholesalers and jobbers of boots and shoes. A few years after the Boston fire he became a member of the firm of Davis, Whitcomb & Co., boots and shoes, and later was interested in the Portsmouth Shoe Company. During the last 20 years he has been interested in the development of apparatus for power transmission and frictional devices connected with shoe manufacturing. In his early days he sang in the choir of Park street church and Mount Vernon church. He lived 12 years in Malden, removing to Boston in 1871, where he was identified with the Union church and later with the Old South church. Mr. Whitcomb was for many years president of the Massachusetts Temperance society and a member of the Boston Art club. In 1856 he married Mary (Hyde) Leland, who died in 1861. In 1862 he married Mary A. (Lawrence) Hazeltine, who died in 1895. His surviving children are Mrs. Leslie C. Wead of Brookline, Mrs. Alden H. Clark of Ahmednagar, India, Russell Whitcomb of New York and Howard Whitcomb of Boston. His oldest son, Lawrence Whitcomb, died in 1912."
