[56616] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 10 July 2011: "Stetson: Richard Owen Leighton 70, died unexpectedly July 9, 2011 at a Bangor hospital. He was born in Stetson July 4, 1941 the son of Donald W. and Cynthia E. (Savage) Leighton. He lived on the family farm on the Wolfboro Road all his life. He and his brother Robert were cattle dealers for several years. Richard did most of the talking and all of the 'dickering.' The three brothers; Robert, Richard and Clyde started Dairy Farming in 1976. When they finished dairy farming Richard and his brothers purchased a portable sawmill unit and have sold lumber ever since. Richard always enjoyed working in the woods, cutting and yarding logs and firewood with his ATV. In his younger years Richard loved pulling Draft Ponies, a passion he inherited from his father. Richard is survived by two brothers, Clyde Leighton of Stetson and Charles Leighton and his wife Janet of Stetson, two sisters, Charlene Leighton of St. Albans, Rose Tenny of Dexter. Although he never married Richard loved all children especially all his nieces and nephews. He is also survived by one aunt and several cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Robert, and his sister Rebecca."
[18851] Cf. "A history of the Dorchester Pope family. 1634-1888. With sketches of other Popes in England and America, and notes upon several intermarrying families (1888)," Charles Henry Pope (Boston, n.d.) - on-line via Google Books. Ancestry.com offers: "Pope Name Meaning - English: nickname from Middle English pope (derived via Old English from Late Latin papa bishop, pope, from Greek pappas father, in origin a nursery word.) In the early Christian Church, the Latin term was at first used as a title of respect for male clergy of every rank, but in the Western Church it gradually came to be restricted to bishops, and then only to the bishop of Rome; in the Eastern Church it continued to be used of all priests (see Popov, Papas). The nickname would have been used for a vain or pompous man, or for someone who had played the part of the pope in a pageant or play. The surname is also present in Ireland and Scotland."
