[30529] There is some doubt as to his parentage.
[42205] "The Perry County Democrat [Bloomfield, PA], 9 June 1909," p. 3: "Col. Alexander K. McClure, for many years a prominent figure in politics and journalism, died Sunday at his home in Walllngrord, Delaware county, aged 81 years, he had been suffering from infirmities due to his advanced years for some time and Sunday was the first time in more than a week that he felt able to leave his room. In company with his brother-in-law, Alfred Gratz, he sat on the porch of his home for a short time Sunday afternoon. Feeling himself growing weaker he asked to be assisted to a lounge in the parlor and he died a few minutes after he had been assisted into the house. Alexander Kelly McClure was a son of Alexander and Isabella (Anderson) McClure, and was born on his father's farm, the George Hench property at Centre, Madison township, this county, January 9, 1828. Here his youth was passed and all the schooling he got was limited to the brief sessions of a country school, with the exception of a short time when he attended tbe Bloomfield Academy. When fifteen years of age he became an apprentice to James Marshall, in this place, to learn the trade of tanning. His leisure time was spent in the office of the old Perry Freeman, and he soon developed a taste for politics and began writing articles for that paper. The late Judge Baker, recognizing his ability as a writer, recommended him for the position of editor of the Juniata Sentinel, published at Mifflintown, and from 1846 to 1850 be edited that paper. He then bought a half interest in the Franklin Repository, of Chambersburg, and by his forceful editorials and effective speeches soon became a power In State politics. In 1853 he was nominated for Auditor General by the Whigs but was defeated. He studied law in Chambersburg and was admitted to the Franklin county bar in 1856. His rise to prominence was rapid and he held several appointments under the administrations of Governors Curtin and Pollock. He was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1856 which nominated John C. Fremont for the Presidency. In 1857 and 1858 he was elected to the State Legislature and in 1859 was elected State Senator. He was Chairman of the Republican State Committee in 1860. A member of the Republican conven tion which nominated Lincoln in 1860, Col. McClure was the only one who suggested that the Pennsylvania delegates should break away from Simon Cameron, of Pennsylvania, and vote for Lincoln. This was done and Lincoln's name stampeded tbe convention. When the Civil War broke out Col. McClure was a leader in the State Senate and urged vigorous measures. He was chairman of the Committee on Military Affairs and was closely identified with the war policy of Governor Curtin. He formed close relations with President Lincoln and his Cabinet and took a prominent part in national politics. As Adjutant General he superintended the drafting of Pennsylvania 'A' troop. Col. McClure went to Philadelphia more than fifty years ago, where for a time he practiced law. In 1872 he was elected to the State Senate as an Independent. In 1873 he was defeated for the office of Mayor of Philadelphia by a small majority after a bitter contest. With the late Frank McLaughlin he established 'The Times,' and for years wielded a trenchant editorial pen. One of his greatest battles was a crusade against the 'Dandy Mayor,' William B. Smith. His bitter attacks upon Mayor Smith's administration caused the latter to bring suit for libel against the Times. Smith was given a verdict of nearly $50,000. After advancing years had caused him to give up his editorial labors, he busied himself with writing his reminiscences and revising several of his earlier works. In 1903 he was appointed Prothonotary of the Supreme and Superior Courts of the State. He was for many years president of the Clover Club. Col. McClure was a cousin of Mrs. Charles A. Barnett, of this place." [See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_McClure. ]

A file in Ancestry.com in 2013 offers: "Anthony Thompson (1612-1647) from England on 'Hector' 1637, a founder of Quinnipiack (New Haven) 1638, and signer of the Compack; soldier in Indian Troubles, 1642; m. 2nd Katherine. Thompson Lineage compiled by William Baker Thompson, published by Telegraph Printing Co., Harrisburg, PAA company of puritans led by John Davenport and Theophilus Eaton sailed from England in the Hector and another vessel (name unknown). There were three brothers in the party that left England, led by Rev. Davenport and Rev. Eaton: Anthony, John, and William Thompson. They arrived in Boston on June 25, 1637. In 1638, they settled in Quinnipac and were joined by many others from England and others already there. In 1640, the general court ordered the name changed to New Haven. In the list of names of those who formed the settlement is Anthony Thompson, "Four persons in his family"; estate 150 pounds; lands in the first division, 17 1/2 acres; in the neck, 3 1/2 acres; lands in the meadows, 92 acres; lands in the second division, 38 acres. Seating in the meeting house 1647, first for the men's seats viz. -- the middle seats have to sit in them. Anthony Thompson was assigned seat 6, William Thompson to seat 7. Secondly, for the women, seats in the middle. Sister Thompson was assigned to seat 7. They beat their drums to call people to church. The ministers wore gowns and bands as they did in England. The settlers' first Sunday in their new home was April 18, 1638. Rev. Davenport preached. On June 4, 1639, Anthony Thompson with other male members of the church signed the colony compact at a meeting held in Robert Newman's barn. Anthony was also a soldier in the Indian troubles, New Haven Colony. Anthony also had a "brother" William and a "brother" John. Both were mentioned in Anthony's will made March 23, 1648, a short time before his death at the end of the month. He was of New Haven, CT in 1639. According to Savage he had brothers John and William. He also says that Anthony 'probably came over with Gov. Eaton, bringing with him his wife and two children, John and Anthony. Their daughter Bridget was born in CT. Cutter, in his History of NY, p. 575, states that Anthony and his brothers William and John, embarked at London on the ship 'Hector' in company with Theophilus Eaton, Rev. Mr. Davenport, and others from Coventry. They arrived in Boston on 26 June 1637. He gives their reason for emigrating because they were Dissenters from the Church of England, and left home to 'enjoy quietly here the principles of their faith, as well as to avoid the constant persecutions, taxes, and exactions which were so frequent during the reign of Charles I. "The Davenport Colony, as it was known, finally settled in Quinnipiac [New Haven], where Anthony signed the constitution on 4 June 1639. All three Thompson brothers secured land, John being located in East Haven. By his second wife, Catherine, he had three more children, the last, Ebenezer, thought to be a posthumous child. According to 'Banning & Allied Families', Kate Banning, 1928, the Thompson origins stem from: Thompson of Kent [spelled 'Thomson'] Thomas Thomson of Sandwich Co., Kent, Merchant had a son, Thomas, who married a Mansfield. Arms were granted to him in 1 600. His children were: Henry, Anne, and Thomas. Of these three, both Henry and Thomas Both had sons named John, Anthony, and William. Which of these is Anthony of New Haven, CT may never be known. Birth Place also given as Coventry, Coventry, Warwick, England. Death as given by Linda Crannell was March 1647/48Also death as 16 Mar 1648 per
