Re: Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1956 Ed., 5:214: "Henry I the Liberal (1152-81); son-in-law of Louis VII of France, who went on the crusade in 1178 and was taken prisoner by the Turks". He was also Count of Brie. Henry reigned as Count of Champagne 1152-1181.
http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/CHAMPAGNE%20NOBILITY.htm offers: "Henri de Blois, son of Thibalt IV Comte de Blois & his wife Mathilde of Carinthia [Sponheim] (1126-Troyes 17 Mar 1181, bur Troyes, Saint-Etienne). 'Teobaudus Blesensis comes' made a donation to Montiérender by charter dated 1139 with the consent of 'Matildis comitissa uxor mee et Henricus filius meus'. He left France with King Louis VII in Jun 1147 on the Second Crusade. He succeeded his father in 1152 as Henri I 'le Libéral' Comte de Champagne et de Brie. During his rule, Champagne became a centre of commerce. He was one of the most respected counsellors of the king of France. 'Henricus Trecensium comes palatinus' made donations to the abbey of Mores by charter dated 1154. He left France on crusade once more in 1179, with Philippe Count of Flanders. The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines records the death in 1181 of 'comes Henricus Trecensis' after returning from overseas. The necrology of the abbey of Mores records the death 'XVI Kal Apr' of 'comes Henricus Trecensis'. The necrology of Sens cathedral records the death 'XVI Kal Apr' of 'Henricus comes Campanie'. The necrology of Saint-Loup, Troyes records the death '17 Mar 1180' of 'Henricus comes Trecenses'. The necrology of Saint-Etienne, Troyes records the death '17 Mar' of 'comes Henricus Campanie'. The Livre d'Anniversaires of Chartres cathedral records the death 'XVI Kal Apr' of 'Henrici comitis Trecensi'. m (1164) Marie de France, daughter of Louis VII King of France & his first wife Eléonore dAquitaine (1145-3 or 11 Mar 1198, bur Cathedral of Meaux, Seine-et-Marne). The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines names 'Mariam comitissam Trecensum et Aelidem comitissam Blesensem' as the two daughters of 'regi Francie Ludovico' and his wife 'Alienor Guilielmi filia comits Pictavorum et Aquitanie ducis'. Her parentage is confirmed by Matthew of Paris, who specifies that Marie was the older sister and married the older brother 'Henricus filius magni comitis Theodbaldi Flandrensis', although he does not state her name. She was regent of Champagne during the absence of her husband on Crusade 1179-1181, during the minority of her son Henri II 1181-1187, during the latter's absence on Crusade 1190-1197, and during the minority of her grandson Thibaut III 1197-1198. She was the author of 'le Lai du Chèvrefeuille', and made her court a literary centre. Philippe d'Alsace Count of Flanders sought to marry her in 1184. The Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines records the death in 1198 of 'comitissa Maria Campaniensis'. The necrology of Sens cathedral records the death 'V Non Mar' of 'Maria Trecensis comitissa'. The necrology of Saint-Etienne, Troyes records the death '4 Mar' of 'Maria Trecensis comitissa, regis Francorum filia'."

Raymond E. Scribner's genealogy site in http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com in 2007 includes this: "In that Wem Register, the mothers' names are not listed, so we are not given the name of John's mother. However, we feel certain that it was Margaret Corbett.
"Now, among the important but unanswered questions about John are these: As the eldest son of Thomas and Margaret, wasn't John the rightful heir to the Lordship of Frodesley? But, he didn't follow his father in that position. His younger brother Richard did. Why was that so, and was that the reason for John's departure for the New World?
"It is very likely that John left England for the New World BEFORE the knighting (on 29 September 1642) and subsequent death (on 21 January 1643/44) of his father. At the time he was knighted and given command of a troop of soldiers (knowing that he would soon be involved in combat) Thomas may have decided to prepare a will. With his eldest son, John, gone from the scene, that left Richard as the logical heir.
"Why would John have had a sword in his possession [see the account of the inventory of his property taken at his death]? It's understandable that an average citizen would have a musket [as John had], but A SWORD!
"We find a very convincing answer to that in THE FAMILY OF CORBET, ITS LIFE AND TIMES, written by Mrs. Augusta E. Corbett (Volume 1 appeared in 1917; Volume 2 in 1920). Many thanks to Jean C. Noble of The Corbett Study Group for this information. On page 308 of that book, there is reference to the will of Sir Vincent Corbet (Margaret's father) in which he states, "My Daughter Scryven 40s, to make her a ring ... Thomas Scryven my loveinge Sonne-in-Lawe, my Scemyter with a gilt hilt." Sir Vincent died on 18 February 1622, just a few months before John was born. It's interesting that Sir Vincent's two eldest sons were still living but he gave his sword (scimitar) to his son-in-law! Thomas could have given that very-special sword to John after the death of Thomas' eldest son and John's older brother, Thomas, on 16 March 1632/33.
"And, of course, the central question of all: Was the John Scriven, born in Wem in October 1623 to Thomas and Margaret, the founder of our Scribner family in America? We believe that he was, although, we admit, it is impossible to provide absolute and conclusive proof of this claim."
