[37473] This person is from the unverified Meckel Family Tree in Ancestry.com in 2014. In 2014 http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Winch-97 offers: "Samuel was born about late 1640's. Unknown at this time who his parents were, or where he was born. Some genealogy sites say that his father's name was John Winch from England. Some sites say that his mother was Elizabeth Dillingham, Others say Elizabeth Boothby. I tend to believe that the original spelling for his last name was Winche. His father's name may have been John because he named his firstborn son John, who died young, and later named another son John. There must have been a good reason why he wanted the name in the family line. In 'The New England Historical and Genealogical Register ' 1884 Vol. #38, pg 203 - The will of a Nathaniel Hawthorne (died1652) mentions his nephew John Winch and his wife Ann (possibly Samuel's father and mother). And John Winche his 'loving Kinsman'. A haberdasher from London to be executor of his will (possibly Samuel's Grandfather). Note Nathaniel had a sister named Elizabeth. One clue that I am hoping helps identify where he was born, and who his parents were was a Mary Winch (Winche). She came to America aboard the Francis of Ipswich in April 1634, landing at Plymouth. She was 15 and listed as a servant of the Rowland Stebbins family. She married Richard Everett in 1636. She MAY have been related to Samuel - possibly an Aunt. Her husband was well to do, and MAY have helped other members of her family to come to America. Also a note in 'The History of Framingham' says 'The Winches came from Reading.' Which is not far from where Mary landed. There were also Hawthorne in the vicinity. The earliest mention on Samuel was that in 1671 he occupied land 'out of the south bounds of Sudbury Ma. This area would later become Framingham. Around 1670 he purchased 8 acres of land from Samuel How. Also a note in 'The History of Framingham' says 'The Winches came from Reading Ma.', a town about 10 miles west of Boston. Samuel was christened into the church in Sudbury on Feb. 11, 1672, the same day that he married Hannah Gibbs. They had 7 children. John 1674 (died young), Samuel 1677, John 1679, David 1684, Hannah 1687, Silence 1690, Thomas 1694, Hannah died in 1695. Samuel remarried Sarah Upham Barnard Jan. 11, 1697. During the King Philips War ( an Indian war) 1675- 1676. Samuel was in the Ma. Militia. In 1683 Samuel purchased 56 acres at Wolf Swamp, near the Frost Place. Around 1693 Samuel leased 300 acres of land along with Thomas Frost from Mr. Danforth, located on Doeskin Hill. Samuel was active in Framingham becoming a town in 1700. He was active in the town and his church. and held a number of elected positions. Samuel died Aug. 8 , 1718 in Framingham. According to Rev. Swift's Journal he died of cancer."
