[54956] Alfred is son of Alfred George Gray (1906-1993) & Beatrice Marie Stone (1907-1999; m. 30 August 1926). "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," Brownville - Alfred George Gray Jr., 89, passed away at Westgate Center for Rehabilitation and Alzheimer's Care in Bangor on March 23, 2023, after several years of failing health. On February 13, 2020, he suffered a mild stroke that put him into the hospital and then finally to the Westgate Nursing Home, where he's been getting excellent care. He was born in Brownville, June 4, 1933, the son of the late Alfred Sr. and Beatrice (Stone) Gray. He was predeceased by brothers, George Gray and wife, Bessie, and Leo Gray; and sisters, Betty Lancaster and husband, Willis, Teresa Pierce and husband, Victor, and Virginia Grant and husband, Keith. Alfred is survived by one sister, Violet Brown of Saco; and sister-in-law, Sandra of Lakeview. Fred leaves behind his wife of 69 years, Dorothy (Perkins) Gray; son, Daniel and wife, Vickie, and their two sons, Scott and Christopher and families; daughter, Jean and husband, Robert Brown, and their two daughters, Angie and Jamie, and families; daughter, Kathleen Pratt and her son, William, and daughter, Mallory, and their families, and betrothed, Rickey McCormick, of Brownville; son, Shawn Gray and son, Oliver of Freeport; several great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Fred didn't want a funeral when he passed away, so we will respect his wishes and not have a public gathering, but instead I will post something about his life. Fred, better known as Freddie to family and friends did many things during his life. He left school when he turned 16 and went to work at the Barnard slate quarry, where the boss taught him how to set dynamite, when that closed, he worked at a woodsman's camp helping the cook and serving the woodcutters their meals. Throughout the years, he drove pulp trucks and did mechanic work on them for Earl Gerrish, was fire chief of Brownville Fire Department and Brownville Deputy for 12 years, worked in the mill in Brownville as head electrician and foreman, and designed and built many of their machines. He worked at the chip mill and left there to go into business for himself as Gray Brothers Garage in Milo, where he asked his two brothers to join him. A year later they split the business and George went back to MA, Leo took the auto parts, and Fred and I retained the building as a repair garage. He built a wrecker and had a lot of business with that and sold used cars for several years. We changed the building over into a roller-skating rink and ran it as that for 15 years before he decided to retire. We moved to Perry and lived there for 14 years on our 30 acres and then back to our hometown of Brownville. There's no place like home."
[46093] Capt. Hutchings r. Orland, Hancock Co., ME according to the 1910 federal census. "Biographical review : containing life sketches of leading citizens of Somerset, Piscataquis, Hancock, Washington, and Aroostook counties, Maine (1898)", pp. 388-89: "CAPTAIN EDWIN P. HUTCHINGS, a well-known shipmaster of Orland, Me., was born in this town, October 22, 1836, son of Edward and Mary (Smith) Hutchings. He represents the third generation of his family in Hancock County, his home being near the spot where his paternal grandfather, who bore the name Jeremiah, settled as a pioneer. Jeremiah Hutchings was a native of York, Me. He lived to be over eighty years old. His son Edward, Captain Hutchings's father, who also was born in York, accompanied him to this town, and, later occupying a farm in the same locality, was for a long period successfully engaged in its cultivation. The death of Edward Hutchings took place in his seventy-third year. He and his wife, Mary Smith, were the parents of ten children, five of whom have departed this life; namely, Adela, Stephen, Seth, Polly, and Samuel. The survivors are: Reuben, who married Nancy Gray, and is a ship calker in Orland; Ann, who married Samuel Gray; Edward, who married Melinda Gray; Edwin P., twin brother of Edward and the subject of this sketch; and Maria, wife of Harmon D. Gray, all residents of Orland. Edwin P. Hutchings was educated in the district schools of his native town. At the age of sixteen he began going to sea, shipping before the mast, and in a few years becoming a master mariner. He has now for nearly forty years been engaged in both the coastwise and foreign trades. During this time he has sailed in his own vessels, and at present he is the owner of three schooners, all hailing from Orland. Captain Hutchings married Julia Robbins, of Deer Isle, and is the father of five children - Seth, Nettie F., Mary H., Ivyl L., and Arthur E. Seth married Martha Facto. Nettie F. married for her first husband Frank B. Gross. He died leaving one daughter, Mamie; and she married for her second husband Oscar T. Sanders. Mary H. married Elmer S. Barnard, and has two children - Gertrude and Adrial. Ivyl L. married Josephine Ames, and has two sons - Guy E. and Ivyl L., Jr. Arthur E. Hutchings married Rose Snowman. They have one child, Pearl. In politics Captain Hutchings is a Democrat. He is widely and favorably known in shipping circles as both capable and trust-worthy, and is highly respected by his fellow-townsmen. He is a member of Rising Sun Lodge, F. & A. M., No. 71, of Orland; and also a member of the New England Order of Protection."
