[9773] "Iola Daily Register and Evening News [Iola, Kansas], 19 January 1935," p. 1: "G. W. Briner Enlisted When He Was 28 In 133rd Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment. G. W. Briner, one of the few remaining veterans of the Civil war in lola, died at his home, 717 East Broadway, yesterday. The funeral will be held Monday at 2 p. m. m the Waugh funeral home, conducted by the International Bible Students. Burial is to follow in Highland cemetery. Mr. Briner was born at Landlsburg, Pa., August 3, 1843. When he was 18 he enlisted in Company H, 133rd Infantry (Volunteer regiment), and was discharged at Harrisburg. Pa., May 25, 1863. After marrying Mary E. Brunton in 1869, he homesteaded in Osage county, Kansas, later moving to Arkansas. He returned to Kansas in 1923 where Mrs. Briner died December 2, 1932. Mr. Briner retained his health to the last, and was never bedfast. He was the father of ten children, six of whom are living. They are Lillian Roberts, Chicago; George F. Briner, Hutchinson; Myrtle Jack, Inglewood, Colo.; Ray Briner, Denver; Mattie Sexton, of Oklahoma; and Edna Briner, who lives in lola." George was one of the last veterans of the War Between the States alive in Kansas. After marrying he homesteaded in Osage Co., KS, later moved to Arkansas and returned to KS in 1923. See "Briner Family History", pp. 497-9, for an interesting account of his life. George appears to have adopted James Langdon who, age 16, born in NY, is so indicated in the 1880 census in George's family.
