"The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 16 September 1908, p. 2: "On Tuesday, William Conners of ward seven, the veteran lumberman, was receiving congratulations from men of all parties upon his election as one of Bangors three representatives in the legislature, and upon his strong showing at the polls, his vote, 2514, being 49 greater than that of any other candidate of either party for representative.
When Mr. Conners goes to Augusta this winter he will be no stranger, for he is known the length and breadth of Maine, and beyond the borders of the State, as the king of all log drivers, a sound business man who has won success through hard work and as a good Democrat, although not one who ever sought office. He has often been elected to places of honor and trust, but the office has always sought him, and he has always been regarded as a tower of strength to his side in any contest.
Mr. Conners was a member of the Bangor common council in 1873-4, and he has served six terms as alderman from ward seven in 1875-6 when Frederick M. Laughton was mayor; in 1887-8, 1888-9 and 1889-90, under Mayor C. F. Bragg; in 1890-91 under Mayor Edward H. Blake, and in 1906-7 under Mayor John F. Woodman. He was a member of the water board in the late seventies, soon after the water system had been completed, and had charge of the construction of the raft sluice in the dam. He is a director of the Penobscot Loan & Building Association, a trustee of the Penobscot Savings Bank and a member of the Bangor Board of Trade.
His greatest fame rests upon the fact that for 43 years he was rafting contractor at Bangor boom, and in that time superintended the rafting of enough logs to belt the globe five times and leave enough to build a big city. Last year he retired from log navigating, and now devotes himself to the management of his extensive real estate interests. For nearly 40 years, or since June 19, 1869, Mr. Conners has lived in the same house, a roomy old mansion at 859 State street. He says that he would rather spend the winter comfortably at home than mix in legislation at the State capital, but his party insisted that he become a candidate, and, as we have seen, elected him, with the help of a good many Republicans. So to Augusta the veteran log navigator goes, and Banger feels sure that he will do his part to care for the interests of the whole city, regardless of politics."

"The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 21 June 1921, p. 2: "William Conner, one of Bangor's oldest residents and Maine most famous lumbermen, died at his home, 354 State street, at 1:30 thts morning. He is survived by his wife, daughters - Mrs. John F. O'Connell and Miss Helen L. Conners and five sons - John, William, Edward Augustus and Charles P. Conners; also, by two brothers, Edward and Patrick, all of Bangor. William Conners was born in County Cork, Ireland, 86 years ago and has lived almost his entire life in Bangor, his parents having emigrated to this city when he was two years old, and his first boyhood experiences were along the Penobecot river, on the log at Bangor boom. While there were many expert drivers and rafter in Bangor and all along the river for miles above, William Conners and his three brothers, John, Edward and Patrick, early gained distinction as fast and hard workers afraid of nothing, knowing all the ways of the river, and each of them having the knack of getting the best sevice out of a crew and keeping the men contented. From a wedge boy at Bangor boom William Conners advanced rapidly to the positions of camp boss in the woods, boss driver and operator on his own account. He 'drove' every stream in the great Penobscot system, lumbered for himself and in company with his brother Edward and the late John Ross, and finally became contractor for the rafting at Bangor boom, the clearing house for all logs sawed at tidewater mllls. He was associated with the late Timothy Fields and James O'Donohue in various enterprises, including shipping, and one of Bangor's best known West Indiamen, a schooner built In Brewer, was named for him. He built on his own account for log towing purposes the steamers William Conners and Charles P. Conners. From 1861 to 1909 inclusive, excepting two years, Mr. Conners held this great rafting contract and in that time he handled not less than 4,000,000,000 feet of logs, while his operations on various driving waters prior to the long period at the boom would considerably increase the total. At the lowest estimate the logs rafted and driven by William Conners would, if placed end to end, make a girdle of spruce pine and hemlock four time around the world and leave enough over to build a big city. In the days when Mr. Conners was the rafting contractor the Bangor boom was a busy place far different than what it is today. . . .

http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/jglanville/roanhg5.htm provides this line and states: "Lord de Stuteville, who married Bertha de Glanville, probably gave the Church of Dedham, in the Hundred of Lexden, Essex, to Butley Priory, founded by Lord Ranulph de Glanville, his wife's uncle. This gift continued to be held by the Prior of Butley until the dissolution. The Stutevilles were a great baronial house; they came in at the Conquest, and received large possessions in England. Robert de Stuteville fought against Henry I. at Tenerchebrai, and was taken prisoner. The family was officially connected with the Glanvilles in the North, and a close friendship appears to have existed between the two houses. One of them married a daughter of the De Valoins, which probably cemented still closer the families. William de Stuteville, of Gressenhall, Norfolk (a baron of the realm), espoused Margaret, daughter and heiress of Hugh de Say, of Richard's Castle, from whose descendants it passed by a female to the Talbots. The arms of Stuteville and Glanville are still to be seen at Richard's Castle. Bertha de Stuteville (nee Glanville) brought with her, on her marriage, the lordships of Braham and Leyburn. She had two sons, Robert, ob. s.p.; and Nicholas, who succeeded his brother (7th John)."

http://www.cottinghamgenealogy.com/England.html offers: "Cottingham was formerly the seat and lordship of Robert de Stuteville or, Estoteville, who was descended from Robert Grundebeofe, a Norman Baron. William de Stuteville, his heir, being High Sheriff of the county in 1202, entertained King John at his house here, and about the same time obtained a licence from the same King to fortify it."
