Mr Pigman owned steamboats that moved between New Orleans and Havana, Cuba. At the outbreak of the Civil War he joined the Confederate States Army as Lieutenant in the 8th Florida Regiment, was taken prisoner at Gettysburg and imprisoned on Johnsons Island in Ohio. The Pigman home at Wake Key, Florida, was destroyed in an attack by Federal gunboats and Mrs. Pigman came to Savannah with her son to live with her sister. After the war, the Pigmans moved to Macon, Georgia, where William worked in a drug firm, William Augusts Pigman, his son, started working in the drugstore at the age of 15. He came to Savannah at 19 years-old and bought a drug business there. He married Edna A. Breeze of Rome New York; she was a well-known poet in Savannah.

Georgia Historcal Society repository in Savannah, Georgia has a diary that belonged to William Penn Pigman, 1862-1864; the 1862 entries are summaries of his experiences in the Civil War. The entries of April and May 1863 relate to his last battle experience and his capture. The remainder of the diary was written at Fort Delaware and on Johnsons Island, where William was a prisoner of war. Also a diary that belonged to Mary T. Pigman (Wife) and includes an account of her visit to her husband at Johnsons Island prison.

She had been in failing health for some time. A woman of many fine qualities, she was a devoted wife and mother of 20 children, fifteen survive. These include eight sons, Joseph, Jr. of Gloucester, Mass., George of Penobscot, Edward and Charles of Bangor, Harvey of Milllnocket, Frank of Rockland, Rodney of Belfast and Paul of Bucksport; seven daughters, Mrs. Alice Lewis of Detroit, Mich., Mrs. Evelyn Martin of English, Centre, Pa., Mrs. Agnes Cunningham of Oakland, Mrs. Elizabeth Quimby of Glen Cove, Mrs. Pauline Mayo of North Castine, Mrs. June Gratton of Belfast and Miss Catherine Bulduc of Bucksport. Besides her children she leaves one brother, P. H. Hardwell of Bucksport Center, and four sisters, Mrs. Alvah Clements, Mrs. C. H. Sweet, Mrs. Annie McCurley of Bucksport and Mrs. H. D.
