[147] Helen operated a boarding house for students (and faculty?) of the Eastern State Normal School in Castine after Fred's injury. She was active in the Castine Trinitarian Parish congregation and its Mary Cushman circle. Her husband's sister married her half-brother. Estate papers name Lucy Jane as widow and Helen M. Conner as daughter. {The S.A.R. records her marriage with Fred M. Conner as on 23 Dec 1880.} "Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine], 6 September 1948," p. 16: "Castine - Mrs. Helen M. Conner, 88, widow of Fred M. Conner, died Saturday in Bangor. Born in Penobscot, the daughter of Capt. John and Lucy (Hanson) Peterson, she was a member of the Methodist church here. Survivors are a son, Edwin S. Conner of Akron, Ohio, three grandchildren, Edwin K. Conner of Castine, Mrs. Forrest Myers of Akron, and Mrs. William K. Dick of Islip, Long Island, NY, and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Mrs. Conner's residence, Perkins street here. Burial will be in Castine." Helen inherited her final home, 206 Perkins St. Castine, 7 February 1922 from her brother, Harold; the property is now owned by her great-granddaughter, Direxa (nee Dick) Dearie.
