"From the start she despised her adolescent second husband as her social inferior and she seems never to have warmed to him...yet both were tough and calculating, able to exploit their loveless marriage for mutual political gain. They produced the children necessary for the continuation of their lines, then went their separate ways, never deviating from personal political ambitions. ...Haughty, hard and inflexible, she was criticized by contemporaries for her lack of feminine qualities. The enduring image of her is of a daughter who was at war with her father, Henry I, when he died and who made no effort at reconciliation in his last hours. She was born in Bar Harbor Sept. 7, 1934, the daughter of Frank and NevaBelle (Grindle) Warren. Joan enjoyed knitting, crocheting, beano, and going to yard sales. She is survived by her husband, William Leach, Jr. of Orland; three daughters, Lovina and her husband, Douglas Heath of Orland, Elizabeth and her husband, Charles Conners of East Corinth, and Lorraine and her husband, David Saunders of Orland; one son, Thomas Leach of Orland; her father-in-law, William Leach, Sr. of Orland; three brothers, Ora Warren of Orland, Philip Warren of Bucksport, Harold 'Sunny' Warren of Vinal Haven; four sisters, Iris Hayes of Bar Harbor, Louise Fitzgerald and Anene McAllan, both of Portland, and Onalee 'Bonnie' Hopkins of Bass Harbor; 11 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Frank and Bill Warren. Graveside services will be held at a later date for the family only at Oak Grove Cemetery, Orland."
