One of seven children born to Forrester and Lottie Fickett, she lived on a farm in East Steuben until about age 10 when her family moved to the village and ran FickettÂ’s Lunch for several years. She was in the last graduating class of Steuben High School in 1950 before Sumner High School was opened. After graduating she moved to Massachusetts to live with her older sister Sybil. She began taking night classes at the Everett Public Evening School for bookkeeping and typing while working at a bank during the day. Arlene met her future husband, Robert, on a blind date and they married in 1951 during a leave from the Navy. In 1961, they moved back to Steuben, where she worked as a stay-at-home mom raising three children."
