[42841] Annis is from the unverified file at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bowden-171. Dictionary of American Family Names ©2013, Oxford University Press offers: "Bowden Name Meaning - English: habitational name from any of several places called Bowden or Bowdon. Bowden in Devon and Derbyshire and Bowdon in Cheshire are named with Old English boga 'bow' + dun 'hill', i.e. 'hill shaped like a bow'; one in Leicestershire (Bugedone in Domesday Book) comes, according to Ekwall, from the Old English personal name Buga (masculine) or Bucge (feminine) + dun. There are also Scottish places of this name, but there are comparatively few bearers of the surname Bowden north of the border. In England the surname is found most frequently in Lancashire and in the West Country. In Devon and Cornwall there has been some confusion with the Norman personal name Baldwin. English: habitational name from Bovingdon, Hertfordshire, so named with the Old English phrase bufan dune 'on, upon the hill'. The surname may also have arisen as a topographic name from the same phrase used independently, for someone who lived at the top of a hill. Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Buadáin 'descendant of Buadán', an Old Irish personal name."

[42218] This person is from an unverified file in 2017 in Ancestry.com which states James m. in 1772 Dorcas _____ (b. in 1750). Ancestry.com offers: "Henry Name Meaning - English and French: from a Germanic personal name composed of the elements haim, heim 'home' + ric 'power', 'ruler', introduced to England by the Normans in the form Henri. During the Middle Ages this name became enormously popular in England and was borne by eight kings. Continental forms of the personal name were equally popular throughout Europe (German Heinrich, French Henri, Italian Enrico and Arrigo, Czech Jindrich, etc.). As an American family name, the English form Henry has absorbed patronymics and many other derivatives of this ancient name in continental European languages. (For forms, see Hanks and Hodges 1988.) In the period in which the majority of English surnames were formed, a common English vernacular form of the name was Harry, hence the surnames Harris (southern) and Harrison (northern). Official documents of the period normally used the Latinized form Henricus. In medieval times, English Henry absorbed an originally distinct Old English personal name that had hagan 'hawthorn'. Compare Hain 2 as its first element, and there has also been confusion with Amery. Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic O hInneirghe 'descendant of Inneirghe', a byname based on eirghe 'arising'. Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Einrior Mac Einri, patronymics from the personal name Einri, Irish form of Henry. It is also found as a variant of McEnery."

[7804] Frank is son of Samuel R. Lightner and Julia Ann Stewart. He farmed, then operated a general store (Landisburg) where he was ticket agent and a director of the Perry County Railroad, then was agent for the Newport and Sherman's Valley Railroad in Loysville, and postmaster of Loysville until about 1936. His last ten years he r. with daughter, Helen, on North Fifth Street, Harriburg. The "Commemorative Biographical Encyclopedia of the Juniata Valley," Pub. J.M. Runk, 1897 offers: "SAMUEL R. LIGHTNER, Landisburg, Perry co., Pa., was born in Madison twp., Perry co., Jan. 12, 1828. He is a son of Jacob and Susanna (Sheibley) Lightner, both deceased. The Lightner family is of German origin. Mr. Lightner's grandparents, Matthias and Eve Lightner, were natives of the fatherland and early settlers of Perry county. It is supposed that they resided in what is now Spring twp. They had 7 children, all of whom are deceased. 2 of their sons, Loudy and Michael, lived in Ohio; another 2, Adam and Matthias, Jr., in Huntingdon co., Pa.; and the remaining two, Jacob and Henry spent their lives in Tyrone twp. The seventh child was a daughter, who died young and whose remains, with those of her parents, repose in the Power graveyard Tyrone twp. Their son, Jacob Lightner, was born in 1776; he was a prosperous farmer of Perry co. His wife, Susannah (Sheibley) Lightner, was born in Tyrone twp., Aug. 15, 1787. Their children are: John S., born Dec. 4, 1806; Nancy (Mrs. Peter Schaeffer), born Mary 22, 1808, both she and her husband are deceased; Henry, born March 1, 1810; Peter, born March 6, 1812; Sterrett, born Aug. 14, 1814, died while serving in defense of his country; Elizabeth Jane, widow of Jacob Lay, born Feb. 23, 1817; Eva Ann (Mrs. Jacob Dick), decd., born Nov. 12, 1819; William Lightner, decd., exact date of birth not known; Jacob, born July 4, 1825, died Aug. 27, 1831; and Samuel R. Jacob Lightner died suddenly, Feb. 18, 1861, at the age of 87; his wife survived him until May 1, 1874, dying at the age of 86 years, 8 months and 17 days. During his boyhood, Samuel R. Lightner had only the advantage of the brief winter sessions which were then considered a sufficient allowance for the common schools; during the remaining 3/4 of the year he, like most farmers' boys, was kept abundantly busy at farm work and lumbering. Married in 1853, at the age of 25, he made a home for himself and bride in Tyrone twp. In this early home he lived until 1890, when he removed to the farm on which he now resides and which he had purchased in 1884. Since his removal Mr. Lightner has relinquished the active supervision of farm duties to his son Frank. He has been energetic and progressive, very successful, upright in his dealings and is universally honored and esteemed. He has served in various twp. offices; is a director of the Perry Co. Railroad, and takes an active part in matters pertaining to the welfare of the county. He was formerly a Whig and now belongs to the Republican party. Samuel R. Lightner was married, Oct. 6, 1853, in Tyrone twp., to Julia Ann, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Donaldson) Stewart, old and honored residents of Tyrone twp. Their children are: Ada Kate (Mrs. John S. Patterson); Eliza Jane (Mrs. Wm. H. Neely), decd.; George P., decd. and Frank P., agent for the Perry Co. Railroad at Landisburg. The family attends the Church of God."
