A file in Ancestry.com offers: Taken from 'Lyons Heritage 1984-1984' p. 138 submitted by Ronald W. Newill: Franklin Everett was the seventh generation in decent from Richard Everett, who came from England about 1634-35 and settled in the Dedham, Massachusetts area. His great grandfather, Josiah, served in the Revolutionary War. Franklin was born December 12, 1831,New Portland, Maine, to Josiah Everett and Lucy Churchill Everett. He was brought up on the hardest kind of hard work, as his father was still clearing land and building stone walls on the rocky farm. He married Clara Spencer, August 14, 1853, at New Portland, Somerset County, Maine. Their children were: Fremont, Walter, Edward Burton, and Clara Ethel Newmyer. They moved west a week after marriage, living for a short time at Hustaceford, Dodge County, Wisconsin, where Franklin worked the pineries and did farm work, and Clara taught school for seventy-five cents a week. In 1854 they loaded their possessions into a two-wheeled cart drawn by oxen to Allamakee County, Iowa, where at one time eleven Everett families lived in one neighborhood at Portland Prairie. The spring of 1868 they moved to Burt County, where they homesteaded on a farm two miles north of Lyons, known later as Everett precinct. Several Everett families were already in Burt County. He carried money sewed up in his shirt and Clara had some sewn into her petticoat. He hated guns and never carried firearms. He carried a pitchfork alongside him in the wagon seat, for protection. Franklin bought eighty acres of timber on the Iowa side of the Missouri river, opposite Decatur, and for many years spent his winter in getting saw logs, posts, and wood across the river during the cold weather when the ice could be crossed by team. It was then taken to a sawmill in Decatur. He and other early settlers risked their lives teaming on the ice. Solid ice at night often was open water in the morning. Later he became interested in a general store and band in Lyons. He closed out the store when he was appointed post master. In June 1881, he commenced banking under the firm name of F. Everett and Son. He was a county commissioner and also engaged in the purchase and shipment of livestock. He moved from the farm into town, but he remained a farmer to the end of his life, although he became a large factor in the upbuilding of the village.
'Heritage 1884-1984', p. 138 submitted by Fremont A. Everett: My great-great-grandfather, Josiah Everett, was born at Dedham, Massachusetts, in 1760. At age fifteen he was in the battle of Lexington and later served with Washington at Valley Forge. His son, Josiah Everett II, was born at New Portland, Maine, in 1797 and one of his sons, Franklin (my great-grandfather), was born in Maine in 1831. In 1853 Franklin married Clara Spencer, and a week later they started west, spending the winter in Wisconsin. In the spring of 1854 they went by ox cart to Portland Prairie, Iowa, and it was there that my grandfather, Fremont Everett was born in 1855. In 1868, great-grandfather and his family moved, via prairie schooner, to Burt County, Nebraska, and toop up a section and a half of land near Lyons. The price was $1.25 per acre from the government. Great-grandfather prospered on the farm, and in 1875 built a store in what is not the town of Lyons; and in 1881 he opened a little bank.
