[26908] One World Tree on Ancestry.com proposes this unverified line and believes Ralph is son of Robert Farnham (1577-1604) and Elizabeth _____ (m. ca. 1600). "New England Families, Vol. I," William Richard Cutter, Ed. (Clearfield Co., 1913), p. 319, offers: "The Farnham or Farnum family is of ancient English origin. The principal family seat is at the Querndon House of Leicestershire, the lineage of which is traced back to the reign of Edward I. ... Ralph Farnham, immigrant ancestor, was born in England in 1603. He came with his wife Alice from London in the brig 'James', sailing from Southampton, April 6, 1635. He gave his age as thirty-two, and his wife's as twenty-eight and they had with them three young children, Mary, Thomas and Ralph. He was a barber by trade but followed husbandry after coming to New England. He settled first in Ipswich, of which he wa proprietor in 1639. He settled finally in Andover, Massachusetts. He died January 5, 1692-93, and the inventory of his estate is dated March 29, 1693." See "Planters of the Commonwealth," Charles Edward Banks (Baltimore: Gen. Pub. Co., 2006), p. 153. http://helenesgenes.com/Farnham.html reports: "From email from edith.bartley@worldnet.att.net 11/27/97: "There has been a lot of confusion as the date that Ralph and family left England. There was more than one ship in 1635 named the James. Ralph was not on the April ship, he was the ship of the same name which sailed in the summer. Hotten has it right. The passengers were certified as eligible to leave England on July 13, 1635, and the ship would have left soon after, depending on the winds and whatever. I think they arrived in Boston in September, but I don't have that documented. 'Planters of the Commonwealth' by Charles Edward Banks states that the James sailed for New England the latter part of July and arrived in Boston the last week in September. Included in the passenger lists are Ralph Farnham, age 32, barber, destination Ipswich; Mrs. Alice Farnham, 28; Mary Farnham, 7; Thomas Farnham, 4; and Ralph Farnham, 2. Also on the same ship was Solomon Martin, age 16, shipwright, destination Gloucester. I have assumed this is the same Solomon Martin who later married Alice Farnham after they both were widowed. She would have been about twelve years older than he. Is this a correct assumption? They settled in Ipswich where Ralph became the first town crier." Also see "Pioneers of Massachusetts - 1620-1650," Charles Henry Pope (Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2013), p. 161. Ancestry.com offers: "Farnham Name Meaning - English: habitational name from any of various places so called. Most, including those in Buckinghamshire, Dorset, Essex, Suffolk, Surrey, and West Yorkshire, are named from Old English fearn fern + ham homestead or hamm enclosure hemmed in by water."

Find A Grave Memorial 101216572 offers: "She was born in Kürnbach, Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. A grave stone and inscription for a Barbara Gern, who died on the date shown above, are reported in records of the Grindstone Hill Cemetery or Solomon's Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery, as it is also known. It is not clear when the grave markers and inscriptions were recorded. The book in which they appear, Tombstone Inscriptions of Franklin County, Pennsylvania, Vol. 12, Guilford Township, by John F. W. Pflueger, was printed in 1986 and may be found at the Franklin County Historical Society in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.
This Barbara Gern is undoubtedly the Barbara Gern who was the wife of Conrad Gern, who can be proved to have lived in Guilford Twp., Franklin County. Their grandson, Jonathan Kahl, son of their daughter Christina Gern and husband John Kahl, was christened in 1819 by the minister of the Grindstone Hill Evangelical Lutheran Church. Conrad and Barbara's granddaughter, Catharine Garn, daughter of Conrad and Barbara Gern's son Adam Garn, was reported in an 1880 history of Ashland County, Ohio, (p. 332) to have been born around 1823 in Guilford Twp., Franklin County, Pennsylvania. Their son Samuel Garns lived in nearby Peters Twp., Franklin County, Pennsylvania, from before 1840 until his death in 1880. And in 1804 or before their son John married Susan Smith, daughter of George Smith who was buried in the same cemetery. Therefore, we are convinced the Barbara Gern that was reported to have been buried in the Grindstone Hill Cemetery is the wife of Conrad Gern. Our attempts to find her grave marker in the cemetery were unsuccessful. There are many very old markers with German inscriptions that are quite weathered and hard to read. Undoubtedly Barbara's grave marker is one of those. However, to date we have not identified which marker belongs to her. Barbara's formal name when born in Germany was Christina Barbara Hauser, sometimes also written as Hausser. Because of German naming conventions in use at the time, few people would have known her by that name. She would have been known as Barbara Hauser or Barbara Gern after marrying. And that is the name by which she was identified when she immigrated to America in 1785. However, birth and christening records of three of their six children born before their immigration to America also list her formal name as Catharina Barbara Hauser, undoubtedly the result of confusion over her formal name on the part of the person recording the information in the Kürnbach Evangelical Church records. Other records at the church make it clear that children attributed to Catharina Barbara (Hauser) Gern are in fact the children of Christina Barbara (Hauser) Gern, suggesting that the first names, Catharina and Christina, that were associated with her were not considered to be important or were not carefully tracked. And, as noted, she would have been known in the community as Barbara Gern as reported on her grave marker."
