JoAnn was born in Adrian on July 3, 1924, the only child of Henry Earl and Lorraine Lola (Armstrong) Gruel. She married William Harrison Gardner on July 26, 1946, at Detroit's All Saints Church. JoAnn was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. In addition to her art interests, she was an avid reader who also enjoyed working cross word puzzles, and enjoyed spending time with her family. Survivors include her children, Lane Gardner (Jim) Milligan of St. Paul, Minn., Jill Gardner (Timothy) Bakewell of Adrian and John Harrison (Pamela) Gardner of Birmingham; six grandchildren; and her sister-in-law, Elizabeth "Betty" Gardner Chapman Trafton of Venice, Fla.
