Carmitchell, inside foreman of the Tunnel Ridge colliery, a Reading company operation near Mahanoy City, had the distinction of receiving by mail a certificate or diploma from a mining college guaranteeing his proficiency in every branch of study embraced in the mining courses of the said university. Mr. Carmitchell's course covered a period of 14 years' study during his spare moments since he attained the age of 21 years."
