He was a wealthy planter and owned slaves. He m. (2) "the widow Davis" by whom he had no issue. Richard had ten children with Elizabeth McMackin, and most of their descendants resided in TN. His surname is spelled Schruggs in a McMackin family Bible. The unverified OneWorldTree states he was born 26 Jan 1766 in VA.
