[201] Jay was serving on a merchant marine vessel, the R. P. Resor, when it was torpedoed by a German submarine off of the New Jersey coast on February 27, 1942. See http://uboat.net/allies/merchants/crews/ship1384.html and http://uboat.net/allies/merchants/ships/1384.html. His father was presented with the Mariner's Medal in commemoration of the great service his son had contributed to his country. Jay Andrews was a descendant of Lakewood, Ohio's early settler, Price French (see http://www.lkwdpl.org/lore/lore199.htm). See "A Careless Word -- a Needless Sinking: A History of the Staggering Losses Suffered by the U.S. Merchant Marine, both in Ships and Personnel, during World War II," Arthur R. Moore (American Merchant Marine Museum, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, N.Y., 1983 to 1998) and http://www.usmm.org/killed/a.html. A posting at Ancestry.com states that Jay Spoor Andrews is son of Jay Collins Andrews and Lillian J. Spoor. "Ohio Soldiers, Sailors and Marines, World War, 1917-1918," p. 55 lists Jay Spoor Andrews of 15316 Detroit Ave., Lakewood, OH and his service in the naval auxiliary.
[46932] "The Perry County Democrat [Bloomfield, PA], 1 September 1937," p. 3: "Mrs. Harriet Nuel Sheibley, aged 79 years, 8 months and 16 days, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Minnie Ryder, in Newport, about 9 a. m., yesterday (Tuesday) following a period of ill health which began four years ago when she was stricken with paralysis, and suffered several more strokes since at different times for several years; her condition would become critical and her life despaired of, but she would rally again and the last illness began Sunday. She was a daughter of Henry Frederick and Annie Holman Baker and was born at the Baker homestead, now the Mrs. Sarah Neely farm, a mile from Loysville, on the Landisburg road. She was married to Mr. J. Calvin Sheibley, near Alinda, who died of typhoid fever in November, 1896. Her married life was spent at Alinda and near Greenpark, until going to Newport. For eighteen years she had her home with her daughter, Mrs. H. A. Eby, and the last two years with her other daughter, Mrs. Ryder. Mrs. Sheibley was a faithful member of the St. Peter's Reformed church and Sunday School, attending regularly until prevented by ill health and since was a member of the Home Department of the Sunday School. She was a wonderful wife and mother, neighbor and friend, always having a smile and a cheery word of greeting for all. Her sunny, cheerful, fun-loving disposition won for her a host of friends and with others we remember her as the best of neighbors. Her family has lost a wise and devoted mother, whose life speaks for itself. One son, David, died in infancy and the surviving children are: Milton H. Sheibley, Roseglen; Mrs. Minnie Ryder, Newport; Annie, Mrs. H. A. Eby, Greenpark, and William Sheibley, near Bloomfield; also surviving are eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was the last member of a prominent family of twelve children."
