[9298] William is son of J. V. Simmons and Emeline Winchell McDowell. Ancestry.com offers: "Simmons Name Meaning - English (southern): patronymic either from the personal name Simon (see Simon) or, as Reaney and Wilson suggest, from the medieval personal name Simund (composed of Old Norse sig 'victory' + mundr 'protection'), which after the Norman Conquest was taken as an equivalent Simon, with the result that the two names became confused."
[55022] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 30 July 1959, p. 23: "Southwest Harbor, Jul 29 - Mrs. Bertha C. Plnkham, 79, died Wednesday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Kathleen Wentworth, with whom she made her home. She was born September 3, 1879 at Harrington, the daughter of William and Clara (Colson) Thompson. She had lived at Steuben and Tremont. She was a member of the Tremont Congregational Church and a member of the Pythian Sisters of Bernard. Besides her daughter, Mrs. Wentworth, she is survived by two other daughters, Mrs. Edith Newbert of East Holden and Mrs. Avis Getchell of Stougham, Mass.; two sons, Clarence Pinkham of Ellsworth and Eugene Pinkham of Hampton; many grandchildren and great grandchildren."
[26538] This ancestry is not verified, but is as presented in the LDS Church's Pedigree Resource File in 2007. Ancestry.com offers: "Ward Name Meaning - English: occupational name for a watchman or guard, from Old English weard 'guard' (used as both an agent noun and an abstract noun). Irish: reduced form of McWard, an Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac an Bhaird 'son of the poet'. The surname occurs throughout Ireland, where three different branches of the family are known as professional poets."
