Son of Joseph A, and Lois Norton Beal, he was a lifelong resident of the town. He was well known along the coast in his activities in the weir and fishing industries, also as captain of the schooners Little Sadi,e Helen Maria, Egg Rock, Rush Light and Triton. He owned the first motor driven boat in town. He was a member of the Reformed Baptist church, Jonesport lodge F. & A. M. and a charter member of Moose-a-Bec lodge, Knights of Pythias. Surviving are four sons, Arthur of White Head, George of Jonesport, three daughters, Mr.s Gertrude Calor of New Castle, N. H., Mrs. Ema Martin of Groton, Mass., and Mrs Viola Leighton of Jonesport; 18 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren."

Samuel Getchell was taxed in Berwick, ME in 1713 and on 9 Nov. 1714 he m. Elizabeth Nason (Genealogical Dic. of Maine and New Hamp. p. 258.) She was b. 23 Aug. 1694 at Berwick (S.Noyes & W.G.Davis Dict. of Maine & New Hamp. 1938 Part IV p. 504.) The Marriage wasn't soon enough for the court which 3 Jan. 1715/16 had the couple up on charges of fornication, meaning the child had been b. before the canonical time (Province and Court Records of Maine 1964 V 5 p. 173.) At the next session 3 Apr. 1716 the two appeared to answer the presentment for fornication. The penality being ten stripes apiece on there naked backs and to pay cost of 3 li: Is: od, or pay a fine of 30s (ibid p. 176). The description of his Berwick property as it appears in several deeds indicates that it was south and east of the Great Works River and just north of Cooper and Spencer homesteads" (York deeds v.20, p.216. v.21., p189. v. 32., p.105: and v 32., p. 105 which is a page number repeated: also see map in E. S. Stackpole Old Kittery and her Families 1903. p. 133.) These data places Samuel Getchell close to the home of Robert Gray, whose son Joshua Gray m. a women I believe to be an unrecorded daughter of this Samuel Getchell. Link, at Fort Wayne, Indiana, on Saturday, Sept. 29, [1906] at the age of 87 years. His remains reached Port Royal on Monday, accompanied by his son, Judge Samuel M. Hench, and were taken to the home of R. E. Groninger, where funeral services were conducted by Rev. McAfee, of the Presbyterian Church of which the deceased was a member, on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, after which interment was made in Church Hill cemetery. The deceased was well and favorably known by many of this section and was at one time and extensive contractor. A more extensive notice will be published next week."
