Burke's Peerage, on the Earldom of Carrick: Duncan, a grandson by a junior line of Fergus, the Celtic ruler of Galloway, was recognised by King William (The Lion) of Scots as overlord of the area of Galloway known as Carrick and made Earl of thereof by 1196. His granddaughter Margaret was Countess of Carrick in her own right but when she married Robert de Bruce he became Earl of Carrick in right of his wife. It was his son, another Robert, who was the celebrated Robert "The Bruce" and became King of Scots in 1306. From this moment on the Earldom of Carrick became increasingly closely connected with the royal house. Indeed in 1469 an Act of the Scottish Parliament ruled that it should be evermore annexed to the eldest sons of the Kings of Scots, and it remains to this day one of the Scottish titles of the Prince of Wales.
Marriage Information: Duncan married Avelina Fitzwalter Stewart, daughter of Alan Fitz Walter 2nd High Steward of Scotland and Eve Sweyndottir of Crawford, about 1200. (Avelina Fitzwalter Stewart was born about 1171 in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland.)

He is named as maternal uncle of Gauthier de Brienne by William of Tyre (Continuator). He joined the Fourth Crusade in 1199, but in 1201 he left the main body of crusaders in southern Italy to join Gauthier de Brienne. He arrived in Palestine [before 1205] and was appointed Constable of the kingdom of Jerusalem by King Amaury II in 1205. He was appointed Regent of Cyprus for his brother-in-law Hugues I King of Cyprus in 1205. In 1207, he lifted the Seljuk siege of Satalia [Antalya] in southern Asia minor in response to the call of its ruler Aldobrandino, but was himself expelled presumably after attempting to take the town for himself. He fled Cyprus after the end of his regency in 1210, allegedly taking with him a large part of the royal treasure, and sought refuge at Acre with his nephew Jean de Brienne who had recently married Maria Queen of Jerusalem. Gauthier later complained to Pope Innocent III of how King Hugues had treated him. - m firstly (Bonne de Scey). - m secondly (before 1205) as her second husband, Bourgogne de Lusignan, repudiated wife of Raymong VI Comte de Toulouse, daughter of Amaury, King of Cyprus & his first wife Echive of Ibelin (-after 1205)."

[53677] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 11 September 2003, p. 16: "Milbridge - Richard J. Leighton, 51, died unexpectedly Mon., Sept. 8, 2003 in Sidney. He was born in Machias Oct. 27, 1951, the son of James and Jacqueline (Hawkins) Leighton. Richard owned and operated Leighton's Garage in Steuben for more than 20 years. During that time he was a member of the Maine Towing Association. Most recently he was driving a delivery truck for Inland Seafood Co. of Milbridge. Richard enjoyed watching his son Richard compete in drag racing at Winterport Dragway. He devoted himself to his wife and children, spending time camping traveling and talking with them. Richard is survived by his wife, Marie (Huntley) Leighton of Milbridge; three children, James Leighton, Amy Fickett and Richard Leighton, all of Milbridge; two grandsons, Tyler and Joe Fickett, who were the light of his life; a sister, Jean Leighton of Eddington; a special niece, Stephanie Huntley and her companion, Alfred Haycock; two sisters-in-law, Shelley Huntley and Debbie Huntley and her fiance, Steve Mancinho; two special friends, Billy and Chris Phinney; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was a very likeable guy."
