[51092] "The Ellsworth American [Ellsworth, Maine], 14 October 2013": "Little Deer Isle - Walter Daniel Billings Jr., a longtime resident of Little Deer Isle, passed away at the age of 93 on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013, in Deer Isle. Born in Little Deer Isle, Walt was the fourth son of Walter Billings Sr. and Georgia Saunders Billings. He grew up working on the water, most notably on the sailing vessel Mercantile, which can still be seen plying the waters of Penobscot Bay nearly 100 years after she was launched. The Mercantile, which was built by his father and uncles on the family shore property in Little Deer Isle, delivered pulpwood from the surrounding islands to Brewer. He graduated from Deer Isle High School in 1939, winning the prestigious Balfour Medal for being the most versatile student, encompassing academics, athletics and citizenship. After graduation, he worked at the Bullard Machine Co. in Bridgeport, Conn., in the summertime while scallop fishing the remainder of the year. When war came along, Walt and all of his brothers enlisted in the Armed Services. He chose to join the U.S. Army Air Corps, even though he was extremely competent on the water. He rose to the rank of staff sergeant in the 8th Air Force, 81st Fighter Squadron, where he served as a ground crew chief in charge of P-47 fighter aircraft. He returned to Little Deer Isle unharmed after the war, like the rest of his brothers, except his best friend 'Hutch' who was killed in action while serving in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. Post-war, Walt did what he knew best, following the call of the sea and becoming a yacht captain of highest regard. For many years he was the captain for Briggs Cunningham and Lucie Cunningham Warren of Greens Farms, Conn., operating their yachts from the Bahamas to Newport, R.I., but mostly in and around Long Island Sound. Walt was especially fond of his time spent aboard the sailing vessel Brilliant, which is now berthed in Mystic, Conn. He was a vital person at the Pequot Yacht Club in Southport, Conn., for many years, where his common sense and ingenuity were always relied upon. Walt was a member and ordained Elder for the Community of Christ, where he served and ministered until his last day. So strong were his religious convictions that ice had to be cut in order for him to be baptized on the family shore in January of 1942. He lived his life in Little Deer Isle and Fairfield, Conn., where he was highly respected for his professionalism and expertise around the water as well as for his spirituality in his church community. Predeceased by his brothers, Kenneth, Daniel, Winslow, Owen and Amos; sister, Nancy; grandson, Matthew; and brother-in-law, Harry Arenburg. Walt is survived by his wife of 66 years, Evelyn Lorraine Billings, at home in Little Deer Isle; daughter, Mary and Clyde McVicar of Canon City, Colo.; son, Edward and Diane Billings of Monroe, Conn.; and son, Walter III and Linda Billings of Bel Air, Md. Also surviving are grandchildren, Holly, Robert, Lorraine, Katelyn, Jonathan, Aubrey, Ashley and Daniel; great-grandchildren, Brandon and Autumn; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all of his friends and family and remembered for his excellence on the water, love of life, inspiration, and guidance to all."

[11537] John III (of Portugal)(aka João III Le Pieux), king of Portugal (1521-57), the son of King Emanuel. At his accession Portugal was at the height of its power, but during his reign its influence began to wane. Colonial enterprise, however, continued; Portuguese title to Brazil was confirmed by the Congress of Badajoz in 1524 and the country's Asian possessions were expanded. John established the Inquisition in Portugal in 1531, under his brother Henry, who later became king. John also allowed the Jesuits to enter the country in 1540, and their influence in education became dominant toward the end of his reign. Cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_III_of_Portugal.

[19639] William emigrated in 1633, one year before his brother, Thomas. As one of Edmund Quensey's servants, William was admitted to the First Church of Boston 9 Feb 1634. With Thomas, he was a firm supporter of the Rev. John Sheelwright, and elected to follow the banished pastor to New Hampshire where they founded Exeter ("the Falls of the Paschataqua"). The brothers signed the Exeter Combination there 4 Dec 1639, an agreement for self-government. See http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hwbradley/aqwg1149.htm#24432 and See "The Great Migration Begins," R. C. Anderson (Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1995), Vol. 3, pp. 1922-1924, with reports: As a Wheelwright supporter he was disarmed in 1637. He went to Exeter in 1639, but apparently did not stay long. On 18 Oct 1649 William witnessed the mark on Thomas Chabinock, the sagamore of Wells. In 1653, when the Bay took control of the lands now Maine, William did not gracefully submit, and was reported to the court for endangering the welfare of his neighbors and the peace of the community. On 25 Oct 1653 he was presented at York Court for 'casting an aspersion upon the magistrates of the Bay'; he was admonished and paid a fine of 2s. 6d. On 29 Jun 1654 he was presented for 'denying the College to be any ordinance of God and therefore it was not his judgement to give anything to it, when there was something demanded of him for it'. At Wells [now in ME] he was drawing wine in 1649. On 29 Apr 1661 he was allowed to draw beer at Boston for the year ensuing. The license was renewed 1662-1669. For 1668-69 he was also licensed to keep a house of public entertainment. In his will, dated 18 Apr 1670 and probated 4 Jun 1670, [additions from "Abstracts of Early Suffolk Wills", New England Historic Genealogical Register (NER) Vol. 48 p.458] "William Wardell of Boston" bequeathed to "my dear wife Elizabeth Wardell the one-half of my now dwelling house in Boston" during her natural life and also all moveables in the house, "out of which she shall pay unto my daughter Rachel Wardell" £25 [paid in furniture]; to "my wife's daughter Hannah Gillet" £21 [paid in household stuff on day of marriage or at eighteen years]; to my wife's daughter Deborah" £20; to "my eldest son Uzall Wardwell the other half of my now dwelling house," and the whole house to be his at the decease of William's wife, Uzall to pay to "my son Elihu Wardell" £40; to "my daughter Leah, wife to Will[iam] Tower," 10s.; to "my daughter Meribah, wife to Francis Pitfield [sic] [Littlefield] of Wells," 10s., to "my daughter Mary, wife to Nathaniel Rust," 10s., residue to son Uzall Wardwell, he to be sole executor; "my loving friends James Everill & Will[iam] Bartholomew" to be overseers.
