Smbat I "the Martyr", King of Armenia was born circa 845. He was the son of Asot I 'the Great', King of Armenia and Kotramidé (?). He succeeded his father and ruled twenty-four years. King of Armenia in Transcaucasia between 890 and 914. He lost Duin to Afshin, the governor of Azerbaijan, in 894. He lost Taron to the emir of Amida (Diyarbakir) and Arzn in 895. He lost Kars, along with his queen, it's other noble women, and it's treasure, to Afshin in 897. He crowned Adarnase as King of Iberia in 899. He crowned Constantine as King of Abasgia (modern Abkhazia) circa 904. He was attacked by Yusuf and Gagik, King of Vaspurakan, in 910. He was taken prisoner by the Saracen military commander Bulkasim and tortured 'for one full year' in 913. He died in 914 in Duin. He had been in ill health the past two years, although he was bedfast only a week. Death was due to diabetes. Mr. Welker was a son of the late Daniel and Sarah (Faust) Welker and was born in Lykens Township, September 27, 1862. He was confirmed a member of the Gratz Reformed Church and was united in marriage to Adaline E. Umholtz by the late Rev. W. G. Engle. Mrs. Welker passed away a number of years ago. He is survived by four sons and eight daughters: John Welker, Lykens R. D.; Charles Welker, Elizabethville R. D.; Harry Welker, Gratz and Edward Welker, Steelton; Mrs. Albert Klock, Gratz; Mrs. Edwin Hartman, Gratz; Mrs. German Daniel, Lykens R. D.; Mrs. Francis Scheib, Lykens R. D.; Mrs. Charles Hess, Halifax R. D.; Mrs. Elias Bowers, Millersburg R. D.; Mrs. Norman Sitlingegr, Gratz and Mrs. Ira Mausser, Elizabethville R. D. Other survivors are a sister, Mrs. Adaline Miller, thirty-five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Mr. Welker was a lifetime resident of the Gratz community where he had engaged in farming for many years."
