Vivian entered Eastern State Normal School (now Maine Maritime Academy) at Castine, Maine in 1898, teaching in small schools to pay for her tuition and graduating in June, 1901. In the fall of 1900 she met Ed Conner, a fellow student whom she married in her family's living room - her famly home adjoins the Union River north of Amherst. After the birth of their first child she returned to the normal school and finished the Advanced Normal Course in 1905. She was organizer and president of the Goodyear Women's Club, Central High School PTA, the Women's Democratic Club and League of Women Voters, all in Akron, Ohio. She also belonged to the Sixth Ward Democratic Club, Public Affairs Study Club, the Cleveland (OH) Shakespeare Society (charter member), and the Cleveland South Side Women's Club. She was active in the Society of Mayflower Descendants, Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR # 215834; Regent of the Akron Chapter), National Huguenot Society, Daughters of American Colonists, National Society of Women Descendants of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company (National Number 626), National Society of Magna Carta Dames and the New England Genealogical and Historic Society. She was active in the Women's Suffrage Movement, was Democratic Party State Central Committeewoman and vigorously engaged in local politics. She was President of Akron and Summit Co. Democratic Womens Club; president chaired the Division of Citizenship Training of the Akron and Summit County Federated Clubs (1926); ran for city council; was first female Democratic Party candidate for County Commissioner (1926); active in the Cleveland Shakespearean Club; served on the Summit County Board of Visitors; DAR Regent; first President of the Goodyear Womens Club; attended the 1936 Democratic Party convention in Philadelphia as an alternate delegate; leader in the Akron Public Affairs Study Group. She chaired the May, 1938 convention of the Federated Democratic Women of Ohio. In 1935 Governor Martin L. Davey of Ohio appointed her special investigator in the sales tax division with a salaryof $145 per month, resulting in controversy as some felt the salary was excsssive. She was one of the official participants at the inauguration of the first scheduled passenger service at the Akron Municipal Airport 14 June 1931 - "Akron and Summit County," Karl H. Grismer (Akron, OH: Summit Co. Historical Society), ca. 1952. She would have agreed with First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton ("It Takes a Village," 1996) in the "view of government that dates back to the Pilgrims. In this view, government is an instrument both to promote the common good and to protect the individual's rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." She was first president of the Mothers' Clubs of Kappa Kappa Gamma (her daughter Marian's sorority at The University of Akron) and of Chi Theta Tau. She is buried beside her husband in Castine. Her final residence with her husband was on the corner of Hillside Terrace and Litchfield Road in Goodyear Heights, Akron, Ohio.
Here is her own written biography, transcribed by her granddaughter Vivian:
Born 27 September 1881, Amherst, Maine, daughter of Seth A. and Marion (Williams) Kenniston. Graduated from Eastern State Normal School, Castine, Maine in 1901. Married 6 December 1901 Edwin Solon Conner of Castine. Taught in the public schools of Maine until going to Cleveland, Ohio where my husband was coach and math teacher at Lincoln High School. In 1919 we moved to Akron, Ohio where he was Director of Recreation and Physical Education at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company.
hile in Cleveland I became active in the Woman's Suffrage movement and the Federation of Women's Clubs. Was President of the South Side Woman's Club and while President organized the Jr. South Side Woman's Club - now a prominent club in Cleveland.
In 1915 or 1916 helped to organize the Cleveland Shakespeare Club. Later became its president. We also organized Vickary Shakespeare Club during my term in office.
In Akron, Ohio, as I had three children in the public schools I became interested in P.T.A.. Was director at the Central High School for several years and recording secretary for the P.T.A. Council. When the children entered colleges I followed them by helping to initiate mothers' clubs for the fraternity and sororities. Was president of the first Chi Theta Tau Mothers Club and the same for Kappa Kappa Gamma.
As women had been granted the right of suffrage in 1921, I became interested in the League of Woman Voters which urged woman to become active in politics. For several years I was President of this organization later arranged under its auspices one day Citizenship Schools.
In 1922 the Akron and Summit County Democrat Woman's Club was formed. And I served as it president - the same year the sixth ward Democratic Woman's Club was organized. I was the first President and during the duration of the Second World War served again as president. I pioneered in running for public office in the early days, running unsuccessfully for councilwoman and county commissioner. I was elected Democratic Committee woman for the Fourteenth Congressional District in the 1934 election and again in 1936. Also was elected delegate to the Ohio Democratic National Convention in 1936 when F.D.R. was nominated for his second term. For sixteen years I served on the Board of County Visitors for Summit County, sometimes as chairman. Actively associated with the Western Reserve Society, General Society of Mayflower Descendants, the Akron Chapter of the D.A.R. and am a member of the Huguenot Society of Ohio, National Society Magna Carta Dames, Women Descendants of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company and the George Washington Chapter, Daughters of the Colonists.
