[30002] Sir Gilbert was of West Ayton, Yorkshire. See "A genealogical history of the dormant, abeyant, forfeited, and extinct peerages of the British empire," Bernard Burke (London: Harrison, 1866), p. 52, and "Feudal and military antiquities of Northumberland and the Scottish borders," Charles Henry Hartshorne (London: Bell and Daldy, 1858), p. 151. "The Yorkshire archaeological journal, Vol. 12," Yorkshire Archaeological Society (Leeds [etc.]: Yorkshire Archaeological Society), p. 265 deals with Gilbert's right to the de Aton arms. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~yewenyi/6/21789.htm offers in 2012: "SIR GILBERT ATON of West Ayton, &c., co. York, son and heir of William Aton of the same, by Isabel (d), daughter of Sir Simon DE VEER, Of Goxhill, co. Lincoln, and Sproatley in Holderness. He was knighted, with the Prince of Wales, 22 May 1306, and had a grant of free warren in his demesne lands in Barlby, the Holmes, Welham, and Knapton, 7 August 1308. He established his claim to the lands of William de Vescy of Kildare [Lord de Vescy] in 1316 and 1317, did homage 7 November 1317, and had livery of Langton and Wintringham, co. York, 22 January 1317/8, and of Malton, 26 November 1318. In 1323-24, he confirmed, for 700 marks, to Henry de Percy, the grant which Anthony, Bishop of Durham, had made him of the castle of Alnwick, He was summoned to three Councils, 30 December 1324 and 20 February 1324/5, and 25 February 1341/2, by writs directed Gilberto de Aton'. Will dated 10 April 1350. [Complete Peerage I:324-5, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]" See also Sir Bernard Burke's " Dormant, Abeyant, Forfeited and Extinct Peerages, Burke's Peerage," (London, 1883), p. 15, Aton, Barons de Aton.
[2145] William joined the great revolt of 1173 and in defeat saw his castles razed. They were rebuilt when the earldom was restored, and Tutbury Castle remained in the family until 1266. She was born August 20, 1922, to George and Lila (Maker) Farris, grew up in Cutler and graduated from Washington Academy. She worked her early years in the shipping department of the family owned A.M. Look Canning Company. Priscilla spent her life beside her loving husband, Shirley E. Look, until his death in 2003. She was involved in her church, teaching Sunday school and being active in the Awana Program. She raised a family of four of her own children; Ronald (deceased), Sheila Griffin (deceased), Isabel Piger of Williamsville, N.Y., and Claire Day and husband, Wade of Bucks Harbor. Priscilla, along with Shirley, raised two nephews as her own, Malcolm Holmes and wife, Katherine, of East Machias, and Eric Holmes and wife, Jill of Jonesport. Priscilla was predeceased by a sister Isabel Cates, a brother Robert Farris, a son in law Crail (Pete) Piger and a son in law Clarence (Happy) Gardner; she is survived by a brother John Farris and wife, Ruth of Cutler, as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Her later years, were spent at the Grace Home in Harrington and then at East Point Health Care, in Machias where many wonderful people loved her and shared in her care. She was a sweet lady and was easy to love. Although her memory suffered, she never lost the ability to remember the love of her savior, Jesus Christ, demonstrating her dedication by singing 'Jesus Loves Me', with Eric on her last birthday."
