[24393] "HESSE-ROTENBURG." LoveToKnow 1911 Online Encyclopedia. © 2003, 2004 LoveToKnow (http://27.1911encyclopedia.org/H/HE/HESSE_ROTENBURG.htm) offers: "In 1627 Ernest (1623-1693), a younger son of Maurice, landgrave of Hesse-Cassel (d. 1632), received Rheinsfels and lower Katzenelnbogen as his inheritance, and some years later, on the deaths of two of his brothers, he added Eschwege, Rotenburg, Wanfried and other districts to his possessions. Ernest, who was a convert to the Roman Catholic Church, was a great traveller and a voluminous writer. About 1700 his two sons, William (d. 1725) and Charles, divided their territories, and founded the families of Hesse-Rotenburg and Hesse-Wanfried." Annie is daughter of Leonard Monroe Orcutt (1853-1935) & Martha Ellen Rolf (1857-1925; m. about 1878 & of Eddington, Penobscot Co., ME).
[30005] Cf. http://www.birdchildsandgoldsmith.com/acatalog/Rothermels_of_Wachbach.html. http://braselton.tripod.com offers: "Johannes Leonard ROTHERMEL was born in 1688 in Germany. Many early records have Johannes born in Wachbach, either Wurtenberg or Holland. There is a Wachbach in Wurtenberg, Germany; however recent researchers have found no Rothermel records there. Traditionally his name has sometimes been listed as Johannes Christian and again that has not been substantiated. In 1985, a researcher, Florence K. Heydt, finding no records in Wachbach, Germany, did learn of records in a small village in the Palatinate, named Hassloch. The Lutheran church in that village did list the children of Johannes Leonard and Magdalena Zimmerman, with names and birth dates that were identical to Johannes Christian and Sybilla Zimmerman. To complete this major correction, it should also be pointed out that the arrival of Johannes Leonard and family in America is not really known. He may have arrived before ships lists were kept, in the period between 1723 to 1727. It was surmised by others that he and his family were on the ship 'Thistle of Glasgow', which arrived in Philadelphia 29 August 1730. His son in law, Peter Federolf was on that ship. And since Johannes wasn't listed, it was assumed he died at sea. It was the practice not to list women and males under 16. But the real fact is we don't know. Most of the Rothermels who lived in Berks County are descendants of Johannes Leonard. He was married to Sybilla Magdalena ZIMMERMAN in 1708. Children were: Leonard ROTHERMEL, Christian Z ROTHERMEL, Anna Margaretha ROTHERMEL , Johann Peter ROTHERMEL, Lorentz Z ROTHERMEL, Johann Paul Z ROTHERMEL , Johannes Z ROTHERMEL." [16320] Identity is from Bridgett Smith [bascs@snark.wizard.com] - not verified. "American Pioneer Families," J. M. Dale, on Ancestry.com World Tree Project (not verified) states that she is Sarah Catherine Stoner, b. 1734, d. 1760 in Heidelberg Twp., Berks Co., PA, m. ca. 1753, daughter of John Steiner (b. 1705 in Switzerland) and Caterine Brenneman (b. 1700-1708 in Gresheim, Rhein-Hesse, Germany). "An Essay of the Stoner/Steiner Families of Pennsylvania", Samuel S. Wenger, in "Pennsylvania Mennonite Heritage, Vol. 11, No. 1", p. 23 (Lancaster, PA: Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society, 1988) offers re: John Stoner/Steiner (d. 1750): ". . . he married Catherine Brenneman, daughter of the famous Melchoir Brenneman, the early settler in Pequea Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In 1730 he received from the large 700-acre tract of his father-in-law a tract of 150 acres near the present village of New Danville. His widow married Benjamin Wissler. Many of the present-day Stoner descendants in Lancaster County, except those in the vicinity of Ephrata, descend from this couple. Through the years this has been the most important Stoner line in Lancaster County."
