To this union three sons and two daughters were born. He passed away Tuesday, August 30, 1977, at the Veterans Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota. Survivors include wife, Marie (Waggoner) Ferguson; son, Lester (and Phyllis) Ferguson; son, Walter (and Diane) Ferguson; daughter, Nellie (and David) Idso; daughter, Donna (and Dale) McJunkin; 14 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one brother, Forest; and two sisters: Mrs. Eva Siles and Mrs. Omar (Hazel) Svenmungson. He was preceded in death by one son, Leroy; his parents, three brothers and two sisters."

While in Arizona, he was a florist, and owned and operated the Blossom Shop in Arizona. Prior to that, he was a florist and did landscaping in the Tamaqua area, and did layout and much of the design for Sky View Memorial Park, Hometown. His wife, Lucille, died Nov. 17, 1985. Surviving are a son, Paul A. Schmerfeld Jr., Phoenix; a daughter, Mrs. John (Martha) Wahl, Queen Creek, Ariz.; two sisters, Alverta Kruhn and Ruth Schmerfeld, both of New Jersey. Interment will be in Sky View Memorial Park, Hometown."
