Edward m. Joan, the Fair Maid of Kent (1328-85), dau. of Edmund of
Woodstock (Earl of Kent; son of King Edward I and his first wife, Margaret
of France). Their son became King Richard II (1377-99). For comments on
the love triangle with Joan, Edward and Thomas Holland, see "The Three
Edwards...," Michael Prestwich (N.Y.: St. Martin's Press, 1980), pp.278-79.
Prestich states (p.280): "Contemporaries regarded the Black Prince in his
prime as an exceptionally gifted man, highly intelligent, brave and
personally impressive." He was created the first English Duke (of
Cornwall, 1337), was Prince of Wales in 1343, and distinguished himself in
military campaigns (Crecy, etc.).
