[43114] "Snyder County Tribune [Middleburg, Pennsylvani], 19 January 1879," p. 3: "Struck by lightning. On account of the bad health of Samuel Ritzman, of Spruce Hill township, his brother, P. T. Ritzman, came to attend to the work of the farm for him. On Thursday a violent storm came up as he was in his brother's barn feeding the stock, and as in the act of throwing down hay, the lightning struck the barn, and in its passage struck him, and burned his feet as well as his hands aud legs frightfully. Mrs. Samuel Ritzman ran to the barn when she saw smoke risiug therefrom, and let out the horses; when doing so, she heard a moan, and on going to that part of the building, found it on fire and Ritzman surrounded with flames He beckoned to her, and she with the aid of a boy, succeeded in getting him out of the building. The unfortunate man lingered in great agony until Friday evening, at which time he died. The fire spread rapidly, and before all the moveable property could be got out it was reduced to ashes. Most of the farming utensils were destroyed, also one horse aud twelve sheep, with only $600 insurance to cover the loss. The deceased was married only three months ago. The heroism and the pluck ot the lady cannot be too much admired, her clothing caught fire and she got several severe burns in trying to save her brother-in-law. - Juniata Tribune." Cf.
