He graduated from Ellsworth High School in the Class of 1969 and from the University of Maine in Orono with a degree in civil engineering. He was employed for many years by the state of Maine as a civil engineer. Gary worked for the Hancock County Sheriffs Department for several years and was a member of the Senator Hale Hose Company from 1970 to 1985. In 1998, Gary and his son moved to Florida and they returned to Maine in 2012 for family reasons.
He is survived by his beloved son, Greg Beal; brother, Lloyd Beal and wife, Karen; nephew, Ben Beal and wife, Jen; niece, Kate E. Beal; stepchildren; Jamie L. Campbell and Kaycie L. Campbell; great-nieces, Sophie and Grace Beal; great-nephew, Joey Beal; cousins, Richard F. Beal, Thelma S. Beal and Ricky Smith and wife, Vicki; He was predeceased by his parents; and cousin, Thomas F. Beal."

Deceased was a soldier of the Civil War, born in Perry county, Jan 5, 1828, and was a son of Peter Flickinger and Margaret Ritter, also natives of that county. He was a member of the Reformed church of Carlisle. Besides his wife he is survived by six children - Mrs. Anna Eliza Rhoads, of Carlisle; David N., Perry county; Mrs. Ida Martha Uhler, Geroge V., and John M., of Carlisle; also one sister and three brothers - Mrs. Susanna Wagner, Martin and Benjamin, all of Perry county, and Prof. Henry F., of Philadelphia. Funeral will take place Friday at Kutz's church at 11:00. Friends will please meet at the home in Carlisle at 10:00. Interment at Letort Springs cemetery."

Shortly after the census was taken, he married Mary Jane Stambaugh and fathered Clara Ellen (b. 03/13/61, d. 09/13/63) and William H. (b. 03/27/63, d. 07/01/64). He stood 5' 5" tall and had black hair and gray eyes. Mary Jane died in 1864, and he married Elvina Sheibley, fathering Anna Eliza (b. 1866 - married Cornelius Rhoads), Newton David (b. 06/03/67), Ida Martha (b. 1870 - married a Uhler), George Vernon (b. 08/19/72), and John Martin (b. 06/21/77). A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg March 10, 1865, mustered into federal service there March 16 as a private with the second organization of Co.
