[48759] "Bangor Daily News [Bangor, ME], 20 February 2015": "The ever-present twinkle in Vic's eyes was lost on February 17, 2015 at the Island Nursing Home in Deer Isle. He was born on October 11, 1925 during a snow storm in Deer Isle, the son of Arthur Cabot and Beatrice (Pickering) Haskell. After attending schools on Deer Isle until his senior year, Vic graduated from Cape Elizabeth High School in 1943. He then served in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Shortly after his discharge, he proposed to and married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Marie Weed, on August 17, 1946. After a year at the University of Maine, they returned to Deer Isle and later moved to Stonington. In 1951, Vic opened V-R Market and later Vic's IGA in Stonington, which he operated for over 30 years. Many high school students got their first jobs working at Vic's and he eased the economic stress of winter on the Island by extending credit to many of his customers. Vic was a member of American Legion Post No. 102, Masonic Marine Lodge No. 122 and a Shriner. In his retirement years, he welcomed many friends and new acquaintances to his "Breakfast Club" in the basement of his home in Stonington, where pool and cribbage games, comradery and Barb's muffins and biscuits were enjoyed by all. Vic was predeceased by Barb who passed away on October 12, 2010, his brother, Arthur C. ("Dud") Haskell, of Deer Isle and his sister, Carolyn Heston, of Indianapolis, Indiana. He is survived by a son, Dean and his wife Cris of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina and a son, Chris and his wife Jane of Gardiner, Maine and their sons Dustin and Sean."

Eugene farmed and then entered the grocery store business at New Germantown and later in Harrisburg, "The Perry County Times, 3 December 1942," p. 12: "Mrs. Annie J. Showvakcr, widow of Eugene G. Showvaker, former residents of Perry county, died at the home of her nephew and niece, Mr. and Mrs. Lyman Kistler, in Harrisburg, on Saturday, November 28, 1942. She was 82 years old. Mrs. Showvaker was a daughter of Jacob and Sarah (Snyder) Rickard, residents of Loysville for many years. She and Mr. Showvaker were married February 9, 1882. For several years they conducted a grocery store in New Gerniantown, but in 1885 they went to farming in Pleasant Valley, near Mannsville, and later moved to Harrisburg, where they conducted a grocery store. Mr. Showvaker died some years ago. Mrs. Showvaker is survived by one brother, James C. Rickard, Esq., of Blain, and one sister, Mrs. Frank P. Lightner, of Loysville. Mr. Harry C. Showvaker, of Bloomfield, is a brother-in-law of the deceased. Mrs. Showvaker was a good woman of lovely character and her death is mourned by all who knew her. Funeral services were held in Harrisburg Tuesday and burial was made beside her husband's grave in the New Bloomfield cemetery."

Johann Adam Wirth was born on August 30, 1727 in Berod, Westerwald, Germany. Johan Adam Wirth emigrated to America on the Ship Two Brothers, Thomas Arnot, Commander, qualifying on September 28, 1753 at the Court House in Philadelphia, Pa. He was the son of Johann Jacob Wirth b. February 11, 1697 in Hochstenbach, Westerwald, Germany; died 1734 or 1735, and Maria Eva Sohn, b. July 1, 1704 in Berod, Westerwald, Germany; died March 13, 1784. Maria was the daughter of Johann Peter Sohn who died on November 9, 1749 in Berod, Westerwald, Germany. The name of Johann Adam Wirth is spelled that way on the ship passenger list. The name of his mothers brother, Johann Peter Sohn (b.18Jan1725) appears next to Johann Adam's on the ship list. There are emigration records specifying that Johann Adam Wirth left Berod where he was born and came to America on the Ship Two Brothers in 1753. (see more Palatine Families, Henry Jones, Jr., 1991 p. 506) His birth date was found in the Parish Records at Hochstenbach, Westerwald Region of Germany. This date corresponds to Johann Adam's birth, death date, and age given on his tombstone and found in the Old Wirth Evangelical Lutheran Church records at Killinger, PA.
John Adam Wirth married on August 3, 1755 by Rev. John Caspar Stoever at Bindnagels Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lebanon, PA to Eva Elizabeth Schnug 1730-1800, daughter of J. Matthias Schnug 1711-1795 and Elizabeth Schall. The Schnugs, like the Wirths, were also from Berod, Westerwald, Germany, and they came to America in 1740. One of Evas brothers, Christian Schnug was born at sea in 1740; d. in 1783, and he resided in the Berrysburg, PA area of Dauphin County, PA not far from where his sister resided. Records on the Schnugs can be found in the Parish of Hochstenbach, Westerwald, Germany.
Johann Adam Wirth may have first settled in Montgomery County, Pa., then removed to the Tulpehocken Settlement, and on to the Lebanon area, then finally to Clover Hill in Lykens Valley, Upper Paxton Township, Dauphin County. This area was then still part of Lancaster County. Records indicate that Johann Adam traveled from Lebanon on several occasions between 1763-1768 to claim and clear land in Lykens Valley. He was one of the first five families settling in Lykens Valley, others being Andrew and Jane Lykens, Ludwig Shott, John Rewalt, and Abraham Shora (Jury). Buffington's, Hoffman's, Umholtz's and Woodside's were also early settlers of Lykens Valley.
The original Wirth homestead was located on what is currently known as the Harrisburg North Golf Course near Killinger, Pa. Wirth land holdings included numerous farms in and around Killinger, land which Johann Adam had divided among some of his sons. On June 6, 1774, John Adam had 352 acres warranted to him and again on June 18, 1774, he had 360 acres warranted to him from the Province of Pennsylvania. He had already cleared about 20 acres of the land by that time. One record, the "History of Dauphin County", indicates that he increased his land holdings to about 1200 acres. In addition to dividing some land among his sons, he gave one farm to the Reformed Congregation and for Wirth's Evangelical Lutheran Church Congregation in Killinger. In the early years, both congregations utilized the same church. According to early records, the original Wirth's Evangelical Lutheran Church was located near the present day Old Salem Lutheran Church Cemetery, then Wirth Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery. Originally the Salem Lutheran Church was called Wirth's Evangelical Lutheran Church and Cemetery, and some references can still be found to support this. In the early years, armed members of the Church congregation stood guard outside during services to protect the preacher and congregation from Indian attacks. Johann Adam Wirth was very committed to Christianity and the Lutheran faith, and he served as an Elder and the Church treasurer for a number of years. The script on Johann Adam Wirth's tombstone in the Old Wirth Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery at Killinger reads "The purchaser of the land and donor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church together with the burial places upon which his remains slumber until the morning of the resurrection." Both tombstones for Johann Adam and his wife Eva Elizabeth Schnug Wirth were made of white marble. They were badly eroded, but still were legible in 1991. The author installed a new granite tombstone for Johann Adam and Eva in 1992.
Four of Johann Adam and Eva's children were born in the Lebanon are: Johann Adam, Jr., b. 1755, Johannes, b. 1758, Johann Christian, b. 1759, and Johann Jacob Wirth/Wert, b. 1764. Johann Adam Wirth, Jr. married Elizabeth Preiss, Nye, and it is thought that he moved to Virginia after 1805; Johann Christian Wirth married Catharine Magdalena Bretz and resided in Chapman Township, Snyder County, PA; and Johann Jacob Wirth married Sophia Miller and resided in Killinger, PA near Millersburg. Records indicate that Johann Adam and Eva Elizabeth Schnug Wirth had a total of eleven children. In addition to the four named above who were born in Lebanon, the others included: Anna Catharine Wirth who married to Sebastian Metz and resided near Berrysburg, PA, Johann Peter Wirth, b. 1766 married to Elizabeth Sheesley and resided in Carlisle Springs, Cumberland County, PA, Johann Henrich Wirth, b. 1769 married to Elizabeth Enterline, daughter of Rev. John Michael Enterline 1726-1800, and resided in Stone Valley, Lower Mahanoy Township, Northumberland County, Johann George Wirth, b. 1770 married Anna Catharina Miller and they resided near Killinger, PA, Anna Margaretta Wirth, b. 1771 married to George Michael Radel and lived near Berrysburg, PA, Johann Philip Wirth, b. 1773 married Elizabeth Loos and settled in Snyder County near Mt. Pleasant Mills, PA, and Johann Joseph Wirth, b. 1775 married Barbara Kitch and after 1826 resided in Crawford County, OH. Pastor Casper Stoever's records show birth and baptisms for the four sons who were born in Lebanon, PA. Some other children of Johann Adam and Eva Elizabeth were baptized at the Wirth Evangelical Lutheran Church at Killinger, Upper Paxton Township, Dauphin County, PA near Millersburg.
One early account on Johann Adam states that when he came to Lykens Valley, his family used the broad branches of a stately white oak tree, then monarch of the forest in the valley, for their shelter. The leaves of this tree protected them from the scorching rays of the noonday sun and from the pelting rains, and it was at this site where he lived until erecting his first log cabin. Two old Wert homes remained standing on the Lykens Valley Golf Course until 1989. One was a two story log house. The other dated back many years and contained an excellent spring in the cellar. The record says that Johann Adam built his first cabin by a hillside and close to a fine spring, which today sends forth its cool sparkling water as it did when the red man came to slake his thirst. Since the old house was torn down, the above spring now feeds a large pond on the Harrisburg North Golf Course. Johann Adam's original farm was believed to be an Indian village at one time. He had become very friendly with the local Indians as various stories indicate. In the early settlement, a wounded Indian was brought to his home, whom he and his family nursed back to health, and the gratitude of the local Indians was shown in their every act thereafter. However, this was a time of Indian wars and Johann Adam did not remain long in his new home to be. Before he had finished his log cabin in the forest, he, with the other settlers of the area, were driven away by savages. Johann Adam then returned to his earlier home in the Lebanon area until the Indian wars subsided in the Susquehanna Valley, and then once again returned to occupy his land in Lykens Valley.
The name Wirth was changed to include many variations. These included: Wirt, Wert, Werth, Virt, Vert, Wertz, Virtz, Virts, Vertz, Verts, Werts, Wurtz, etc. Some of the sons of Johann Adam had the last name Wirth on their tombstones. Others used Wert, Wirt and Wertz, particularly after the third generation in America.

Johann Adam Wirth died at 10:00 am, August 25, 1806 at the age of 79 years. He was buried with his wife Eva Elizabeth Wirth at the Wirth's Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery (now referred to as the Old Salem Lutheran Church Cemetery). Eva Elizabeth died in 1800 at the age of 70 years. Her exact birth and death dates are not known.
