[33087] http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/NEVILLE4.htm offers: "Sheriff of Staffordshire in 1510. He held the office of Speaker of the House of Commons in 1514. He held the office of Secretary of State to King Henry VIII. Sheriff of Staffordshire in 1515. He held the office of Member of the Star Chamber in 1519. He was invested as a Privy Councillor. M.P. for Kent. J.P. for Kent, Middlesex, Surrey, Sussex and Worcestershire. He lived at Mereworth, Kent, England. Steward of Westminster Abbey in 1532. His second wife, Elizabeth Bryce, was the granddaughter of a London goldsmith, Sir Hugh Bryce (d. 22 Sep 1496) and his wife, Elizabeth Chester (d. 1504). It is not certain when her father, James, died, but Elizabeth was still underage and unmarried in 1498. She married another goldsmith, Robert Amadas (b. 1470 - d. BEF 14 Apr 1532). They had two daughters, Elizabeth, who died before her parents, and Thomasine. In 1526, Robert Amadas was appointed Master of the Jewel House to Henry VIII. Amadas owned a house in Aldersgate and land in Essex. Upon his death, Elizabeth inherited Jenkins, a 'mansion house' in Barking, and on 28 Aug 1532, married Sir Thomas Neville in the chapel there. According to Carolly Ericksons biography of Queen Mary, Mrs. Amadas 'began, in 1533, to spread ungracious statements about the kings occult destiny'. She said these prophesies had been known to her for some twenty years. She kept a 'painted roll of her predictions' which included battles and deaths and conquest by Scotland, as well as Anne Boleyns death within six months by being burnt at the stake. The story that Mrs. Amadas claimed, in 1532, that she had once been the Kings mistress, has fairly wide circulation. Since she specified that she met him in Sir William Comptons house in Thames Street, this must have been before Comptons death in 1528 . Elizabeth Amadas was arrested for her treasonous statements and Amadas was ordered to pay several hundred pounds to the crown, although whether to free his wife or because there was plate missing from the Jewel House is not clear. Sharon Jansen, in Dangerous Talk and Strange Behavior, doesn't think the self-proclaimed prophet was Elizabeth Bryce at all. Jansen identifies the Mrs. Amadas who compared herself with Catalina of Aragon and Elizabeth Stafford, Duchess of Norfolk as an abused wife as the wife of John Amadas (b. 1489 - d. 1554/5), a member of the King's household with properties in Devon, Cornwall, and Kent. He was married by 1519, but his wife's name is unknown. They had a son and a daughter and she had died by 1542, when he remarried."

Otterus (or Othoer) was "an Italian Baron of the Gherardini of Florence, Lord in Tuscany, went from Florence into Normandy and then to England and Wales about 1000. He was son of Cosmus, the great Duke of Florence." - Carr P. Collins, Jr., "Royal Ancestors of Magna Charta Barons" (Dallas, 1959), p. 103. [He may have been grandson; Mathias, son of Cosmus, may be his father.]
http://cappyzeb.freeyellow.com/ancestors/pages/white.htm (not verified) offers: "The Gherardini were one of the seigniorial families that fell when the Republic of Florence was founded. The first date we have in the family history is 910 A.D. when one Raniero (Rainier?) was living. Family legend states that Anaes, a survivor of the siege of Troy, wandered for seven years after its overthrow, until he came to what was then called Latium, (now Italy). He brought with him his father and small son Ascanius, for whom the province of Tuscany is named. Anaes married the daughter of King Turnus of Latium, who was killed in battle. Anaes succeeded him as king of Latium and divided his lands among his descendants. To Gherardo, he gave the land of He/Truria, where Florence now stands."
http://www.robertkeating.com/otho.htm offers: "Probably the first emigrant Gherardini was Otterus, or Othoer, son of Mathias, a son of Cosmus, the great Duke of Florence. They were also of the Ferrara-Modena branch of the House D'Este, the younger branch penetrating to the Teutonic domains of Charlemagne to found the royal families of Brunswick and Hanover in what is now Germany. Some records say that Otho went to Normandy in the caravan of King Canut of England who had passed through Florence on his way home from a pilgrimage to Rome. It is said that he came into England later with Edward the Confessor when he was called back from exile to be King of England. There is an old lyric quote in English records which says 'the Earldom which to Otho brave, the Saxon sainted Edward gave'. His son, Otho Fitz-Othoer appears in 1058 in the Domesday Book as a baron of England. This man, Otho, was the ancestor of Gerald de Windsor. Gerald was the ancestor of the Fitzgeralds, Fitzmaurices, Carews, Redmonds and Keatings of Ireland, among others. Otho was so powerful that his favor with the King was greatly resented by the native Norman nobles. He possessed three lordships in Surrey, three in Buckinghamshire, two in Berkshire, four in Middlesex, nine in Wiltshire, two in Hampshire, three in Dorset, and one in Somerset. With him, the family name was changed to Geraldini. Otho's son, Walter fitz-Otho Geraldini, was treated as a fellow countryman by the Normans after the conquest of England in 1066. He succeeded to all of Otho's estates and his name is shown in the Domesday Book of 1087 that listed all the landholders of England. Windsor Castle, a great gray pile overlooking the Thames, had just been built amid the forests of Berkshire, and Walter was appointed its first castellan, as well as warden of the forests. He was, it is clear, one of the most Norman of the Normans -- a race renowned for its adaptability, no less than for its valor and ferocity. Windsor Castle continued as a baronage for Otho's descendants for centuries, until it passed out of existence due to lack of male heirs in the direct line. An interesting footnote is the story of how the current English royal family, the House of Windsor, took their name from this vacated baronage. During the First World War, there was enormous anti-German sentiment in England, and the king wanted to distance himself from the German House of Hanover, their name at the time. Since the Gherardini family can be traced as the founders of the House of Hanover, it was very convenient that Gerald de Windsor, baron of England, was related both to the English royal family and the Florentine Gheradinis, and hence the House of Hanover (see above). This provided justification (after much research) for the German House of Hanover to become the more politically-correct English House of Windsor, which they remain to this day."
