[8674] "The Perry Cunty Times [New Bloomfield, PA], 12 January 1928," p. 5: "Landisburg, Jan. 9. - David L. Bower, a well-known and highly esteemed citizen of Landisburg died in the Polyclinic Hospital at Harrisburg on Wednesday morning, January 4th. His death was due to injuries he received when he was run down by an automobile in Harrisburg ten weeks previous to his death. Mr. Bower, whose leg was fractured, ankle crushed and head briused, was apparently recovering from his injuries, when he was suddenly seized with a cerebral hemorrhage, which caused almost instant death. David Luther Bower was the son of Abram and Mary Ann ( Dunkeberger) Bower. He was born at the Bower homestead in Spring township. July 30, 1863. He was aged 64 years, 5 months and 4 days. He acquired his education in the public schools and Bloomfield Academy. After reaching young manhood Mr. Bower taught school for a number of terms, afterward going to Boston, where he entered the Boston Conservatory of Music. Being possessed of marked musical talent and an unusually fine tenor voice, he was a brilliant student nnd graduated with honors from the Conservatory. He then opened a studio in Boston, giving instructions in instrumental music and voice culture. While in Boston Prof. Bower was secretary of the Boston Merchants' Association and also served as Justice of the Peace in Boston for a number of years. After leaving Boston, Prof. Bower opened a studio in Spokane, Washington, where for many years he was a very successful instructor. The deceased was not only a gentleman of culture and refinement but was also a man of honor, whose dealings with his fellow-man were always fair and honest. He was truly a fine type of a sober, quiet, intelligent, public-spirited citizen. He was a staunch Democrat and a consistent member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church since his boyhood. His many friends here were indeed shocked and grieved to learn of his death. He was a kind, thoughtful husband and father, always very thoughtful for the comfort and happiness of those in the home, and his wife nnd four little children as well as his son, Carl, who resides in Long Beach, California, have the sympathy of all in their sad loss. One brother, Edgar T. Bower, of Bloomfield, and two sisters, Mrs. Samuel Snyder, of Bloomfield, and Mrs. Anna Kennedy, of Harrisburg, also survive. Mr. Bower was twice married, first to Miss Ada Clouser, of Bloomfield. To them one son, Carl, was born. After Mrs. Bower's death Mr. Bower returned to his home in Spring township, when some years later he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Rice, of Spring township, who survives as befoe stated with the following children, Dale, Jean, Rose and Lee."

This line is from the unverified Powers Family Tree in Ancestry.com in 2012 - it is highly unlikely that John lived to be well over 100! This tree states John m. in Aberdeenshire in 1683 Jeanette Steele (b. ca. 1664).

To subdue the Irish he induced immigration of Scots in 1612. They were rigid Presbyterians & a bitter feud ensued between the Irish Catholics and the Scottish Protestants. In 1641 there was a massacre of Protestants & over 40,000 perished. Oliver Cromwell, in 1649, avenged and punished the Catholics bringing peace to Ireland. On accession in 1660 of Charles II to throne of England, he appointed his brother, James as Viceroy of Scotland. (James later became James II). James was a bigoted Catholic and the Scottish Presbyterians were the target of his hatred. Thousands of Scots were slaughtered and many fled to Ireland. John Morrison of Londonderry, NH, who died in 1736 was born in Scotland and was among those who fled after the siege of Londonderry, Ireland in 1688-89. Lieutenant Robert Morrison and Captain James Morrison also took part in the battle and were declared traitors by King James in 1689. The Brookville American, 4 March 1920, p. 8: The community of Worthville on Wednesday morning, Feb. 25, was shocked to learn of the sudden death of Samuel Porter Myers. Mr. Myers had finished loading a load of coal and was stricken with heart failure and died instantly. He was removed to his home and funeral services were held Friday, February 27, in the Evangelical church of Worthville, where he had been a faithful member for 25 years. The services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. R. R. Doverspike. Samuel Porter Myers was born at Ohl October 23, 1865, being 54 years, 4 months and 2 days old. He was a son of Henry and Christina Myers, both deceased. Mr. Myers was engaged in farming in Ringgold township for a number of years from whence he moved to Worthville where he had charge of the Slagle mill until recently. He was remembered with a beautiful wreath of flowers by the employees of the Shawmut shop here where he had formerly worked. Mr. Myers was a kind and loving father and will be greatly missed by the community as he was ever ready to lend a helping hand. He is survived by his wife, Mary Caylor Myers, and the following children: Mrs. John Enterline, Worthville; Mrs. Charles Fry, Sprankle Mills; William H. Myers, Brookville; Mrs. Jacob Swank, Elderton; John A. Myers, Brookville; Mrs. John Wyant, Sprankle Mills; Mrs. Ray Reed, Timblin; Mary, Florence and May at home. He is also survived by one brother and three sisters. Interment was in the Worthville cemetery.
