Find A Grave memorial 13964295 offers:
Served in the American Revolutionary War.
James Galloway Sr. who was one of the very first pioneers of Greene County, arriving there in 1797. This is published about James Galloway Sr. on pages 228 and 229 of the "Greene County Ohio History:...the Galloways having been prominently represented here since the days of the very beginning of the Xenia settlement, or from the time that James Galloway, Sr., a soldier of the Revolution and an Indian fighter, companion of Daniel Boone, came into the valley of the Little Miami with his family from Kentucky in 1797 and settled in the vicinity of the Indian Village, or Chillicothe, now and for many years known as Oldtown, just north of the city of Xenia." About 1776, after his service in the revolution, James Galloway removed from Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, to Lexington Kentucky, remaining a citizen of that territory till 1797. It was during this period that he took part in the expeditions of Kentucky troops against the Shawnee Indians at Old Chillicothe, in 1782 and 1784, and determined, whenever peace was declared with them, to found his family home near Old Chillicothe. In 1797, the frontiersman and revolutionary war soldier, James Galloway moved his family just south - at the site of present day Xenia. Twenty nine 29-year-old Tecumseh was taught to read and write by a James Galloway daughter named Rebecca and the two reportedly fell in love. (Some say the "love affair" part may or may not be actually true, but the fact that she taught him to read and write the English language was true) .When Greene County was organized in 1803 he was elected treasurer of the county, an office he filled for more than fifteen years. To him is the psalm-signing portion of the community under obligation for his untiring efforts in bringing first to the county the Rev. Robert Armstrong, and other preachers of the Presbyterian Church, and making his home theirs.During his long and useful life he was ever ready to help those deserving of help. James Galloway Sr. died on August 6, 1838, at the ripe old age of 88 years, and was buried in the Massies Creek burying ground.

[8691] Richard Hughes offers in 2003: "I have recently transcribed the wills of Jean Sergent and her son Bartholomew who both leave property in their wills to Sarah (Sally) McFann, daughter of Jean Sergent. There has recently been a contention as to whether Sarah is the wife of Aaron McFann or William McFann. I believe it is the later. In 1820 Jean Sergent leaves property in Martic Township to her daughter Sarrah including a house and stable to be completly furnished and to be paid out of her estate. In addition, she wills that her son Bartholomew pay to his sister Sarrah $100, "for the express purpose of raising and schooling her numerous family of young and helpless children". In 1821 Bartholomew also leaves property to his sister Sally and that after her decease the property would go to her son Caleb. He also wills that Sally should "live in the house together with all the land and appurtenances thereto belonging during her natural life." In 1823 we have Caleb McFan inheriting property from his mother and states to the Orphan Court "that he is sorry to state that his father would not be a proper person for his guardian"; and being above the age of 14 years, he requests the Court to appoint one for him. But also in 1823 we have Aaron McFann selling his property at auction to pay for the rent. These documents suggest to me that during these years, Sarah McFann was destitute and had little support from a husband; that both her mother and brother were trying to provide her with the means for raising her family. William McFann, listed in Martic Township in the 1810 census, is absent from the 1820 census. Aaron McFann is listed in Lancaster City PA for both the 1810 and 1820 census as head of household with many family members. Nathan McFann, listed in the will of Jean Sergent as her grandson, is still found in Martic Township in the 1830 census. He is later found in Wayne Co. Ohio in the 1840 and 1850 census. I can only conclude from all of this that William McFann is the disfunctional husband of Sarah McFann and that Nathaniel and Caleb are his sons. I have no axe to grind here, but that is how I see it. I also have to acknowledge that Aaron was losing his personal property in 1823. I hope that further research will clarify this matter. In my own family history with the McFanns, I find many disfunctional people. I have never found any early McFanns owning property; they were always poor and just rented the land that they farmed." [Transcribed wills were attached to his email and are not retained.] In 2000 Hughes wrote to Wallace Nolin: ..."We know that Sally McFann was left a horse, stable and house/tavern in Martic Twp. in 1820 and 1821 which should be taxable. The question to be answered is, does Sally now appear on the tax lists as a resident. If she is the wife of Aaron in Lancaster City, she would have had to leave him since he still appears in the Lancaster City tax records. There is no indication in the Lancaster City tax records that Aaron has lost a wife in 1823. When this happens, they are usually entered as "single". Also, if I find that William reappears in the Martic Twp. tax records in 1823 as "single", then it would be a further indicater that he was the husband of Sally. It will be an interesting search. I have found the tax records to be one of the most useful records available to genealogists. Finally, please note that the 1810 census record for William supports the ages for Caleb and Nathaniel, as does Aaron's. What needs to be sorted out is whether the brothers Jonathan and William, and the brothers Nathaniel and Caleb are the sons of Aaron or William. The fact that Nathaniel and Caleb remain in the Martic Twp area while Jonathan and William have traveled to Greene Co. PA by 1824 is the reason I have paired the later up with Aaron instead of William. It would be great if we could find some primary evidence someplace. We don't even know when William died." Hughes offered via email 30 July 2003: "...if the wills showed them to be in Lancaster City, she would be the wife of Aaron; if Martic twp. she would be the wife of William. I re-read the 1820 and 1821 wills and they are both from Martic twp. and that is where the property is located. Aaron is listed in the 1810 and 1820 census in Lancaster City, Lancaster Co., PA. I think this puts the whole issue to rest."
