Possible reason for migration to downeast Maine: "By 1760 the best arable land was gone. In 1763 the Treaty of Paris ended French rule in Canada and Indian terror in the colonies, but in the same year a royal proclamation prohibited west and north of existing frontiers. For many New Hampshire families, the future lay east in the struggling settlements or trackless wilderness of Maine" A Leighton Genealogy: Descendants of Thomas Leighton of Dover, NH by Perley M. Leighton, Vol 1:15. (Available online at Boston Library.
During the French Wars, New Hampshire soldiers had gone up the Connecticut and Hudson Rivers toward Canada and down the Maine Coast into Nova Scotia (which then included New Brunswick). From 1760 to 1840 or so the route to new opportunities from southeastern New Hampshire was into Maine--to the virgin forests downeast, the growing towns in the south, and the potential farmland inland. By coastal ships and by inland trails along the Ossipee and the Androscoggin people flooded into Maine. . . . The Leighton family reflects the extent of this eastward migration. Of the seven heads of family in the fourth generation four settled in Maine; of the 33 heads of families in the fifth generation 18 were in Maine; two at Falmouth; ten inland at Mount Vernon and Harmony, and six in what is now Washington County [which is where Machias is located]. . . . Minnesota drew New Englanders by the 1860s, especially lumberman (nicknamed 'Bangor Tigers'). . . . These down-east natives took west with them their faith in self-government, in local schooling, in religious freedom and in economic initiative.
