[141]

His wife's name is Anna Maria Day; she was born 27 February 1711 and died 14 December 1786 in Berks Co., PA. They left Rotterdam for London with a party of French immigrants on the Ship Samuel, 17 August 1733; he was then age 28 and she age 24. [Their son Michael (1740-1823) m. Margaret Lempert (1743-1809).] {Ref. Pa. German Pioneers, by Ralph B. Strassburger and Wm. John Hinkle, Vol. 1 (1727-75), pp. 106-07.} Mathias was warantee for 100 acres in Philadelphia County in 1742 and before 1750 resided at Colebrookdale; in 1758 he was warantee for 50 acres in Berks County, residing midway between the present Bethel Zion's Church in Grimsville, Greenwich Twp. and the Wessnersville Church on the present paved road north from Krumsville (Schucker's Public School was on the farm in 1949). His will dated 22 February 1762 was proved 23 October 1783; her will was signed 16 November 1786. He was tax collector in 1763. 17 August 1733 he and his wife and his elder brother George "did this date subscribe to the oath of the Government" in court at Philadelphia. A Loy family Internet site: http://www.fortunecity.com/millenium/paddington/63/index.html

Loy names are also found in this site for Alsace: http://www.genealogy.tm.fr/acte.htm

Also see "The Johannes Hench Family in America," edited by Lee Owen Hench and Bernard Lyle Hench (Oceanside, CA: The C. B. Hench Family Publishers, 1981), pp. 405-407. This source reports that Mathia's brother Hans Jurigh (George ?) also emigrated from the Palatinate to PA, arriving on the Ship Elizabeth and qualifying 27 August 1733. The editors also believe the family were Huguenots, as were a number of other settlers in Greenwich and Albany townships in then Bucks Co. (one of the three original counties of PA).

Walter Loy (wloy@enter.net)offered via email 2/5/01: "I am researching our Loy line with the aim of writing a small(?) booklet that traces our line from Matthias Ley through his son Adam and his grandson Adam. I have found bits and pieces on the internet as well as in some historical societies here in Pennsylvania, but there has never been a complete tracing of our line. A Sylvester K. Loy attempted the project but died (1956) before he was able to complete it. I live within perhaps 25 miles of a number of the churches that the early Ley (Loy) families attended and therefore have access to those church records as well as to the records in the Berks Co. Gen. Society and the Berks Co Hist. Society. I have documented my research so I feel that it is fairly accurate.

I have never been able to satisfy myself about the maiden name of Anna Maria (wife of Matthias), although I have seen the references to Day and to Kempff. Do you know of any original documentation? I have also not been able to find any reference to a Matthias Jr, although Matthias and Anna Maria presumably had 10 children and I have found reference to only 8. Perhaps a Matthias Jr died in infancy.

I feel certain that Sybilla Margareta did not marry Johann Andreas Dressler but, rather, a sister, Maria Elizabeth, did.

Perhaps the most important information that I have collected is that Johann Adam Loy (3rd son of Matthias) married Anna Christina Hinckel. They lived in Northumberland Co until his death in 1787, had seven children, the youngest of whom was Johann Adam who married Susanna Focht. She was his 1st cousin, once removed. After the first Adam's death, Anna Christina apparently moved back to Berks Co and court records show that the seven children became wards of Johann George Focht, among others.

Mattes (Mathias) Ley

The history of this Loy family in America begins on August 17, 1733 when the ship 'Samuel' arrived at the port of Philadelphia in the 'New World'. According to Professor I. Daniel Rupp¹s collection of names of immigrants into Pennsylvania, the ship 'Samuel¹ of London, under the command of Hugh Percy, sailed from Rotterdam and, after taking on provisions at Deal, England, continued on its voyage. On board were eighty-nine males and eighty-six females over the age of sixteen, fifty-four males and sixty-two females under the age of sixteen, comprising a total of 291 passengers. Included in the ships¹ company were Mattes Ley and his wife (Anna) Maria, he a young man of 27 years and Maria a young woman of 22 years. The tradition that has been handed down through generations places the original (Luys) family in France and then in what is present-day Germany as exiled French Huguenots. (See the Historical Perspective.) By the time Mattes and Maria embarked on the voyage to America, the Ley family had adopted the German language and customs, and became one of hundreds of families that became known as the Pennsylvania Germans. Some other researchers state that Mattes¹ wife Maria was the daughter of Johann Conrad and Anna Maria Kempff, fellow passengers on the 'Samuel¹. This Kempff family emigrated from Untergimpern near Neckarbischofsheim, (³Eighteenth Century Emigrants, Vol. I, The Northern Kraichgau² by Annette Kunselman Burgert) and if the family relationship noted above is correct, it seems reasonable to believe that Mattes Ley came from the same region in the Pfalz, that is, somewhat to the southeast of Heidelberg.

The most complete sketch to date of Mattes' family after arriving in Philadelphia was compiled by George Tressler Scott in his booklet, The Family of John Tressler and Elizabeth Loy Tressler, privately printed in 1949. I have attempted to verify the information contained therein, and, although I have located documentary evidence to agree with most of his findings, my research has led to some disagreements.

After arriving in America, Mattes and Maria began their trek northwestward, a journey that occurred for most Pennsylvania German immigrants during these times since most of the land near the port of Philadelphia had already been claimed by earlier settlers (mainly Quakers). Several pieces of evidence indicate that Mattes and Maria spent the first ten years or so in Philadelphia County (to become Montgomery County in 1784) before finally arriving in present-day Berks County sometime in the 1750's or 1760's. According to the records of Reverend John Casper Stoever, a daughter, Sybilla Margaretha, of Mathias Laey (note the spelling) was born on June 16, 1734 and baptized by Stoever on August 11, 1734 in the New Hanover Lutheran Church. The sponsors were listed as Sybilla Steinbrennerin and Anna Marg Freiderich. Then about 1737 a son George (Jurich) was born, presumably in the same vicinity (from notes recorded by Sylvester Kline Loy and housed in the Berks County Historical Society in Reading). In 1740 a second son Michael was born, and although no birth record has been found, later references still have Mattes¹ family living in Philadelphia County. Michael¹s birth date appears on his tombstone at the Lebanon Church in Loysville, PA as July 2, 1740. A year later a Mattews Lay was one of several men who petitioned the court in Philadelphia to erect a new township to be known as Colebrookdale Township. Since the location of Colebrookdale is located very near to the Berks-Montgomery County line, Mattes and his family were very likely living in their original home.

On January 7, 1742 a warrant, number 362, was granted to Mathias Ley of Philadelphia County (later Berks Co.) for 100 acres on the Maidencreek - not specified or delineated clearly in the docket (Ref. - PA Archives). And then two years later, the Rev. J.J. Kline recorded the baptism of Maria Elizabeth Ley, aged 3 weeks, at the New Hanover Lutheran Church on July 8, 1744. The father was listed as Mathias, the sponsors as Veit George (Veit Jurgen) and his wife. Further evidence that Mathias had not yet moved to his home in Greenwich Township, Berks County.

Several more children may have been born to Mattes and Anna Maria before moving from the vicinity of Colebrookdale, but, as yet, no birth records have been found for Mary Margaret, Cathrina Magdalena who later married George Michael Breiner, or for Susanna who later married Gottfried Wummer. Johann Adam was most likely not born until the move to Greenwich Township, which may have occurred in the late 1740¹s or early 1750¹s. Mattes is listed on the Greenwich Township, Berks Co. tax rolls for 1752 and then in 1754 he is on the taxable list of those living in the district adjoining Maxatawny.

Matthias¹ name again appears on the Greenwich Township, Berks Co. tax lists from 1755 (Ref. - Scott). By this time he was probably living on the homestead that was located approximately halfway between the Bethel Zion¹s Church (the Stone Church) in Grimville and present-day Stony Run (Wessnersville). According to Scott, Schucker¹s Public School was located on part of the original Loy farm and the house had been converted into Seip¹s tavern. Neither of these buildings exist today.

Several land transfers have been located for Mathias. Fifty acres were granted to Matthias Loy of Philadelphia County (now Berks County) on January 20, 1758 (Ref. - PA Archives). Then on November 13, 1761 -

Whereas John Dunchel obtained from The Proprietaries a tract of land of _____ 100 acres on October 8 -- for the sum of (unnamed) situated in New MaxadŒanien, now Greenwich Township; the said John Dunckel sells 55 acres thereof to Mathias Loy for the sum of 9 pounds (sterling) - subject to all quit rents and purchase money due to the Proprietaries. Dated 4 Jun 1763. (Ref. - Berks Co. Land Transfer records, Commission Book 1, p 78-)

Mattes wrote his will and filed the same on February 22, 1762; he lived another 21 years. In his will he names his three sons George, Michael, and Adam and four daughters - Margaret, Catharine, Susan, and Mary. In the settlement of Mathias¹ account by son George, acting administrator, the following are mentioned: Michael Lay, Johann Adam Lay, Andreas Dressler for Maria, Gottfried Womer for Susanna, Geo Michael Breinor for Catharine, and George Lay. From this information and from other birth records that appear later in this history, it seems certain who these three daughters married. The Margaret who appears in Mathias¹ will may have been the eldest daughter Sybilla Margaret or the daughter that others have named Mary Margaret. What appears to be certain is that the Mary named in the will and the Maria in Mathias¹ accounting are the same daughter - Maria Elizabeth who appears in a number of birth records as the wife of Johann Andreas Dressler.

On September 18, 1765 at the Supreme Court in Philadelphia, Mathias Ley became a naturalized citizen of England.

Also in 1765 Mathias¹ sons George and Michael and son-in-law Andrew Tressler appear on the Greenwich Township tax lists. Mathias himself no longer appears as it was apparent from his will that he no longer owned property. The following information is listed for the three mentioned above. (Ref. - PA Archives)

In the years that followed Mathias¹ move to Berks Co., church records appear at several places, suggesting that the family may have lived at several locations in Berks Co. On the other hand some pastors were known to have served a number of parishes, and it is very likely that the Ley family followed a particular pastor from parish to parish. In any event records exist for the Ley family at Maxatawny, Bethel Zion, Dunkel's, Jerusalem (Allemaengel), and Frieden's (New Allemaengel). (Specific records will be found in later pages). It is known that about 1769, a Œconfusion¹ existed in the Allemaengel Church, resulting in a split of the congregation. Some members left the church, including the Ley family, and with the pastor Daniel Schumacher formed the New Allemaengel Church.

Mathias died on August 26, 1783 and was buried in the Frieden¹s (New Allemaengel) Lutheran Church cemetery at Stony Run, PA. According to Elaine Schwar (Loy file in the Harrisburg State Library), the original marker indicated that Mattes and his wife Maria had ten children, 3 sons and 4 daughters living. These seven children are apparently the ones named in his will. The original tombstone for Mattes read: ³in dieser Gruff ruhen die gebeine von Matthaus Ley welcher gebohren 22 Jen. A. C. (Anno Christo) 1706 mit seiner _____ Ehefrau Ana Maria zeugt er in _____ jahriger Ehe 10 Kinder _____ jens bey leben noch 3 sohn u 4 touch. Er starb 26 Aug 1783². On the new tombstone placed there by Sylvester Loy, Mattes¹ birthdate is February 22, 1706 and his date of death is August 26, 1783. Maria is buried beside Mattes; her birthdate is February 27, 1711 and her date of death occurred on December 14, 1786. On October 21, 1783 a Letter of Administration was filed in behalf of Anna Mary Loy of Greenwich Township, widow and _____ of Mathias Loy, deceased. Witnesses were George Loy, Jacob Leiby and John Berch. Her will names Elizabeth (granddaughter), George Loy¹s daughter, to inherit her things since Elizabeth was her nurse and took care of her.

John George Ley and Rebekah were sponsors for the baptism of John George Lenhart, son of Philip Lenhart and wife Anna, who was born August 16, 1770 and baptized on September 11, 1770 (Ref. - Dunkels). Dunkel's was also known as the Ontelaunee (or on the Ontelaunee) Church. The name Lenhart (Lenhard) appears several times in the Loy genealogy - is there a family connection?

Jorg Ley was listed as a deacon at the Stone Church, Grimville, on Nov. 28,1772 and again on Dec. 11, 1773 (Ref. - Stone Church).

During the Revolutionary War George Ley was in Captain Smith¹s Company, 2nd Battalion, Berks County Militia. (Ref. - Scott)

In the first census of the United States, taken in 1790, George Ley was listed as a resident of Greenwich Township, Berks County. His household included one male over the age of 16 (George), one male under the age of 16 (obviously Jacob), and four females. In 1800, George and Rebecca were listed as older than 45, and one son and one daughter were listed betweenthe ages of 26 and 45. By 1810 George no longer appeared (his death occurred in 1804) but his widow Rebecca did appear on the census list. So we know at least that her death occurred sometime after 1810.

In addition to appearing on the Greenwich Township tax lists in 1765 (see reference under Mattes Ley Family), George appears consistently on the tax lists until his death. In 1767 his assets included 150 acres, 2 horses, 2 cattle, and 4 sheep. In 1772 he paid both county and provincial tax.

George and Rebecca Lai sponsored a Jacob Schmidt, born May 23, 1794 and baptized on August 20, 1794. The parents were Stoffel (short for Christopher) Schmidt and Anna (possibly a daughter of George and Rebecca (Ref. - New Bethel Church).

According to the Stone Church records, an Anna Maria Ley, daughter of Jurchen Ley was buried at the Stone Church on November 30, 1795. She apparently died on November 28, 1795.

In George's will, written on June 6, 1804, he names his children - Anna Schmitt, Margaretha Poh, Susanna Focht, Elizabeth Hummel, Catherine Poh, Magdalena Ley, and a son Jacob.

Spouse: Rebecca Bossert
Death: After 1810
Father: Jacob Bossert

From Dunkels Church records - Martin Ebler and Rebecca Bossert were sponsors for the baptism of Rebecca Bossert, daughter of Rudolf Bossert and wife,
baptized April 24, 1757. Rudolf was probably a brother to Rebecca.

(Researched on July 5, 1998 at the gravesite). Johnann's grave is adjacent but cannot be read except for his name. Dates for Susanna and Johann are from the Windsor Zion Church records.

Spouse: Johann Georg Focht - Birth: 14 Jan 1758; Death: 26 Oct 1841; Burial: Zion UCC, Windsor Castle, PA
Married: 1783

Johann and Susanna were sponsors for the baptism of Regina Billig, born April 30, 1784 and baptized on August 8, 1784. Her parents were Samuel Billig and ____ (not legible) (Ref. - Windsor Zion).

They were also sponsors for Johann George Schoch, born on January 10, 1798 and baptized on February 11, 1798 at Windsor Zion. His parents were Samuel
Friederick Schoch and Catharina.

On February 16, 1801, Joh Georg Focht and Susanna sponsor Susanna Schmitt (Ref. - Smoke Church)

And on October 3, 1813, Johann George Vogt and Susanna were sponsors for the baptism of Hanna Stever at Windsor Zion Church. Her parents were Sam Stever and Catharina.

In John George Focht¹s will, dated December 31, 1841, he is named as a farmer of Windsor Township. He names his wife Susanna and the following children: Elizabeth Jacoby, Polly intermarried with Jacob Shappell, Catharina intermarried with Samuel Stoyer, Susanna intermarried with Adam Ley, Hannah intermarried with John Baiwer, Christina and nine children, George, Jacob, Jeremiah, and John. George, Jacob, and Jeremiah were named as executors and were given the responsibility to look out for John and Christina. Michael Ley Family:
1.6 Michael Ley - Birth: 2 Jul 1740; Death: 19 Jul 1823; Burial: Loysville, PA
Religion: Lutheran - confirmed in 1759 by Rev. Daniel Schumacher

Michael was confirmed by Pastor Daniel Schumacher in 1759, apparently at the Allemaengel (Red) Church - Frieden's did not yet exist.

Michael Ley and Magdalena, daughter of Tobias Stapelton, were sponsors for the baptism of the daughter of George Bauer(Breiner ?), baptized on April 6, 1760 (Ref. - Dunkel's Church).

Michael was naturalized in 1765 (Ref. - Scott). In1765 Michael paid taxes in Greenwich Twp on 100 acres of land, 15 of it cleared, two horses, two cows, two sheep, three Negroes, and six Quit-rents (Ref. - PA Archives).

Michael Ley and Margaretha sponsored the baptism of Anna Margaretha Lemperth, daughter of Nicholaus Lemperth and Dorothea. Anna Margaretha was born July 26, 1768, and baptized on August 7, 1768 at the Allemaengel Church (Ref. - Rev. Daniel Schumacher).

From the records of Stone Church, Grimville - Michel Ley was listed as a deacon on 10/14/1777, 12/5/1778, 11/18/1779, and 1/1/1781.

Michael and George Ley were in Capt Smith's Company, 2nd battalion, Berks Co. Pennsylvania Militia during the Revolutionary War, 1777-1780 (Ref. - Scott).

Also according to Scott's history, Michael took his family to present day Loysville when his son, Johann George, was twelve years old, making that the year 1788. Loysville was renamed after Michael, the town's founder, and can be verified by the town marker.

In Michael's will, dated October 4, 1815, he mentions eleven children, namely, Mary Chistler (sp), Catharine Barnhisel, Nicholas, Margreat Leppert now deceased, Barbary Lupbert, Susand Jekes (Ickes?), George, Eve Barnhisle, Elizabeth Kepler, John and Michael.

The Bernheisel boys who married Michael Ley's daughters were brothers. Also Catherine and Polly Weibley were sisters!

Johann Adam Loy

Johann Adam was in all likelihood the youngest child born to Mattes and Maria. Other researchers have placed the date of his birth as sometime in 1754 or 1755, but, as yet, I have not been able to confirm this. The first dated reference to Adam was in Mattes¹ will that was filed on February 22, 1762. In the will Mattes instructs both George and Michael to pay their brother Adam 10 pounds on January 3, 1776 and again on January 3, 1777, implying that Adam would have reached legal age. If this were the case, and legal age were 21, Adam¹s birth date would be January 3, 1755.

The next reference comes from Pastor Daniel Schumacher¹s records, who listed a Hans Adam Loy as being confirmed on Easter Sunday, April 19, 1767 in the Allemaengel Church.

Several more references have been found. On August 16, 1772 Johann Adam was a sponsor for the baptism of his niece, Maria Barbara, daughter of Michael Ley and Margaretta Lampert (Ref. - Bethel Zion). The other sponsor was an Anna Barbara Kieffels. And then from the same church records, on May 6, 1783 a John Adam Loii and Catharina Frey were sponsors for the baptism of John Adam Germann, son of David and Sara Germann, who was born on May 4, 1783.

But it was the letter from Sylvester Loy (see Forward) that the marriage of Adam to Christina Hinckel was acknowledged. Subsequent research has located Anna Christina¹s date of birth as March 26, 1753 (Ref. - Windsor Zion) and her baptism as March 30, 1755. This latter information is from Pastor Daniel Schumacher¹s Tauf Buch and lists her sponsors as Peter Klug (Klink?) and wife, interestingly listed as an Indian woman - (or as another source indicates, was killed by Indians). Anna Christina¹s father was Jurg Philip Hinckel (9/17/1724 - 10/22/1793) and her mother was Maria Catharine (1725 -1783). (Dates from Norman G. Hinkle, 4758 Cleveland Rd., Syracuse NY 13215, April 1986).

Sometime after their marriage, Adam and Christina moved to Northumberland County were they lived until Adam¹s death in 1787. And indeed the tax lists from the Pennsylvania Archives lends verification. Adam Ley is listed as a resident of Augusta Township, Northumberland County and in 1770 and 1778 paid state and county taxes. In 1782 Adam Lay was taxed for 50 acres of land, 37 acres cleared, 2 horses, and 3 cows. No trade is listed but we can assume that he was a farmer. In 1785 an Adam Loy was taxed for 37 acres, and in 1786 he was taxed for acreage, 2 horses, and 2 cows. In 1787, the presumed year of Adam¹s death, he does not appear on the tax lists. Adam¹s place of burial or cause of death have never been determined. On May 28, 1787 a Letter of Administration was granted to Christina Loy. Be it Remembered -- Adam Loy dece'd -- that on the twenty eighth Day of May in the year of our Lord 1787 Letters of Administration were in due and common Form of Law, granted to Christina Loy of all and Singular the goods and Chattels, Rights and Credits which were of Adam Loy deceased, who hath put in Securities, viz. John Adam Gueloker and Christian Schisler.

In 1788 Widow Loy appears as a taxpayer for 50 acres, 2 horses, and 2 cows. In the History of Northumberland Co., PA edited by Herbert C. Bell, 1891, Widow Loy appears on a list of taxables in 1788 in Augusta Township, which then included the present territory of Upper and Lower Augusta, Rockefeller, Little Mahanoy, Sunbury, and a small part of Cameron and Zerbe...page 700. It is presumed that shortly thereafter, Christina returned to Berks County, perhaps to live with her parents, as she no longer appears on the Northumberland County tax rolls.

During their seemingly short married life, Adam and Christina had seven children, listed by Sylvester Loy as Frederick, Catherine, Elizabeth, Magdalena, Margaret, Rachel, and (Johann) Adam. Sylvester further stated that (Johann) Adam was born approximately six months after the death of his father. Adam¹s tombstone at the New Bethel Union Church cemetery lists his birth as December 1, 1787. Hereafter, Mattes¹ son will be referred to as Johann Adam, the grandson as Adam.

That Christina and the children returned to Berks County appears certain - only the date of return seems to be unknown.

From Roll 689 Index Orphans Court, Berks Co. - PA Archives:

Pg. 331...on May 7, 1794 - Reading: On the same day before the same judges upon the petition of George Hinckle one of the executors of Philip Hinkle deceased in behalf of Magdalena, Margaret, Rachel and Adam Ley stating forth that the said Magdalina, Margaret, Rachel, and Adam Ley are minors under the age of fourteen years, that George Focht and Conrad Kerchner lately appointed Guardians of the said minors have refused to take the burden of the same on them therefore praying the Court to appoint some other person or persons Guardian or Guardians for the said minors. Whereupon the Court appointed George Miller (?) and Simon Kreisher as Guardians for the said minors, above mentioned.

Pg. 336...At an orphans Court held at Reading in and for the county of Berks, on the sixth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety five before James Diemer(?) and George Ege(?) Esquire Judge & upon the petition of Catharine Ley Setting forth that she is a minor above the age of fourteen years and is entitled to a share of the estate of her Grandfather Philip Hinkle deceased and hath no Guardian to take care of her person and estate therefore praying the court to admit her to make choice of a Guardian for the purpose aforesaid. Whereupon she was admitted and made choice of George Focht as Guardian which choice was approved of by the court.

On the same day before the same Judges upon the petition of Philip Alspach and George Hinkle Executor of Philip Hinkle deceased in behalf of Magdalena, Margaret, Rachel, and Adam Ley Setting forth that the said Magdalena Ley, Margaret, Rachel, and Adam Ley are minors under the age of fourteen years and have no Guardians to take care of their persons and estate that they are entitled to a share of the Estate of their Grandfather Philip Hinkle deceased therefore praying the Court to appoint Guardians for the said minors. Whereupon the Court appointed George Focht and Conrad Kershner Guardians for the said minors.

On the same day before the same Judges upon the petition of Frederick Ley Setting forth that he is a minor above the age of fourteen and is entitled to a share of the estate of his Grandfather Philip Hinkle deceased and hath no Guardian to take care of his person and estate therefore praying the Court to admit him to make choice of a Guardian for the purposes aforesaid. Whereupon he was admitted and made choice of George Focht as Guardian which choice was approved by the Court.

On the same day before the same Judges upon the petition of Elizabeth Ley Setting forth that she is a minor over the age of fourteen years and is entitled to the Share of the estate of her Grandfather Philip Hinkle deceased and hath no Guardian to take care of her person and estate therefore praying the Court to admit her to make choice of a Guardian for the purposes aforesaid. Whereupon she was admitted and made choice of George Focht as Guardian which choice was approved by the Court.

Although the dates of birth for the seven children are unknown except for Adam, the above court records indicate that Frederick, Catherine, and Elizabeth were born before 1780 and that Magdalena, Margaret, Rachel, and Adam were born after 1780.

On a family tree provided by Norman Hinkle for the Hinkle family of 1792, Christina appears as still living, but no additional information about her death has been found.

Gunnar Loy (GunnarLoy@aol.com) wrote 31 May 1999 via email: "I am researching the background of the Loys who ended up in Austria ca. 1750-1800. They settled near Linz and the Danube. Family legend has it that they came from France via Belgium either to escape the Terror or religious persecution. What made me interested is that the given names of your ancestors (Mathias Loy and his wife, Anna Maria) were the same as that of mine (Mathias Loy and his mother, Anna Maria). With the continual repetition of given names common in family lines, I was wondering if there might not be a connection. Other given names (though all recent -- last 100 years or so) include Franciscus Xaverius (Franz Xaver), Rudolf, Wolfgang, Dietmar and Helmut. With your Loys travelling from Baden (presumably down the Rhine) and then to the US via Rotterdam, it occurred to me that a sibling could easily have gone east on the Danube from the same region, through Regensburg and on to Linz. A relatively short and easy journey by boat. At the same time, I have been trying to find out historical information about the Loy family arms, one of which is recorded at Forez, France (vicinity of Lyon) and the other at Ratisbonne (Regensburg), Germany. The Regensburg arms are more sophisticated than the Forez arms leading me to suspect that they are possibly from around the 18th century and the other, presumably, earlier. That is strictly a guess at this point, however. Though both are listed in older French armorials, there is no published history or mention available on either family that I have been able to find."

Ancestry.com in 2016 offers this concerning the meaning of the surname: "German (south and Rhineland) and Dutch: from a reduced form of the medieval personal name Eloy (Latin Eligius, a derivative of eligere ‘to choose or elect’), popularized a 6th-century saint who came to be venerated as the patron of smiths and horses.German: habitational name from Loy in Oldenburg.Dutch: variant of Lowy.Italian (Sardinian): from the personal name Loi, a short form of Balloi, a pet form of Salvatóre.Spanish and Italian: possibly from a reduced form of the personal name Eloy (see 1 above), of which the Italian form is Eligio.French (Picardy): nickname for someone who was quick to have recourse to the law: a frequent or vexatious litigant, or perhaps a metonymic occupational name for a lawyer."
