[53752] "Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 26 October 2020: "Ellsworth - Walter L. Bunker, 93, beloved father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2020, with his daughters by his side. Walter was born in South Gouldsboro on March 20, 1927, the son of Fritz and Thelma Potter Bunker. He graduated from Winter Harbor High School. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the US Navy and proudly served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Walter was a lobster fisherman and later owned his own lobster pound and dealership. He married Karen Willey in 1952 and they raised their daughters in West Gouldsboro. Folks in the area would remember him as someone who was always willing to help someone in need - to lend a hand, a vehicle, or some financial assistance. Later in life, Walter left the lobster industry and entered the real estate field. With their children now grown, he and his wife moved to Ellsworth. He worked as an associate broker and while sales were not really his passion, he did enjoy the many families he met and helped to settle in the Ellsworth area. Walter began a long career of public service in the 1960s when elected to the State House of Representatives, where he served six terms. While in the Legislature, he served on the Marine Resources Committee and was House Chair for two terms. After his tenure in the legislature, he was elected to the Hancock County Commission where he served for five terms, several of those years as chair. Walter served on the Board of Trustees at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital for 18 years and at the time of his passing, was an honorary member of the Board of Trustees. He was a member and past Chair of Eastern Maine Development Corporation. After his retirement from the County Commission, Walter continued to work for the county as the Supervisor of the Unorganized Territories. He retired at the age of 84. Following the loss of his wife in 2013, Walter decided the family home was too big and moved to the Leonard Lake Senior Apartments. It was there he made many new friends and enjoyed daily chats with his neighbors. Pup, as his grandchildren affectionately called him, loved his family. He was the happiest when everyone gathered at his house for family birthday parties, holidays, and other celebrations. He was an amateur magician and performed magic tricks for his grandchildren and anyone else who was willing to be amazed. He delighted in having his camp at Abrams Pond as a gathering place for his family in the summer. And while he loved a good party, he also loved solitude and thinking. He could often be found reading his Bunker genealogy books, mulling over early US History, or processing memories from WWII. Walter was an avid vegetable gardener and generously shared his produce with family and neighbors. His sense of humor was his trademark. Even in the darkest of circumstances, he could find a way to weave in some levity. His surviving family members include his daughters, Pam LaHaye of Morrill and Kim Bunker-Hodgkins and her husband, Mike, of Trenton; grandchildren Matthew LaHaye and his wife Jennifer of Southwest Harbor, Kathryn Deetjen and her husband, Bobby of Morrill, and Molly Hodgkins and her partner, Ismael Thadal of China; great-grandchildren Carmen LaHaye, Noah Deetjen, Hannah Deetjen, and Winston LaHaye. He is also survived by one sister, Dorothy Dubowick of Scarborough, sister-in-law, and brother-in-law, Joan, and Jerry West of Virginia, sister-in-law, Jane Willey of Georgia, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Karen; three siblings, Paul Bunker, Irene Pilch, and Mary Millett; his son-in-law Richard LaHaye, Jr.; and one grandchild, Sophie Hodgkins."

[51388] "The Ellsworth American [Ellsworth, Maine], 1 June 1915": "Birch Harbor - Avery 'Pop'/'Gramp' Vance Chipman left this Earth on May 29, 2015, to meet his Lord and reunite with his beloved wife Estelle Church Chipman. He was born Aug. 2, 1921, in Milbridge, the son of Edgar and Ella (Wilson) Chipman. He moved to Bunker Harbor in 1940, having to quit high school and work to help care for his family. He married the love of his life on Nov. 16, 1942, and they were married 71 years at her passing. Nov. 17, 1942 - the day after their marriage - Avery received a letter from Uncle Sam. He was drafted into the U.S. Army as an infantryman in company G of the 397th infantry regiment of the 100th Division. He was sworn in on Nov. 26 in Bangor and went to South Carolina for training on Dec. 11. Avery was away from home serving in the Army for a total of three years, one month, and two days. As a WWII veteran, he had great love for his country and took pride in flying the flag. Upon his return home in December 1945, Avery joined his wife and young son at his in-laws, and went fishing with his father-in-law. A piece of land was soon given to them, where Avery cleared a plot and framed up a house with the help of two older carpenters. Avery finished the house himself, so it was complete enough to move in Sept. 9, 1947. Together, they raised four children there. Avery continued to lobster fish, went Seining, worked on the Dow Air Force Base in Bangor and became a gate guard at the Navy base on Schoodic Point in 1963. There, he became supervisor and worked until 1981. He returned to lobster fishing, retiring in 1986. In their later years, Avery and Estelle enjoyed playing cards, attending public suppers, and traveling around the U.S. and Canada. They were dedicated members of Birch Harbor Baptist Church, and cherished time at home with family and friends. He is survived by brothers, George and wife, Rebecca, Herbert and Albert and wife, Betty; sister-in-law, Alice, and special sister-in-law Annabelle, all of Bunkers Harbor; two sons, James, and Merton and wife, Peggy; two daughters, Jean and husband, Richard Bridges, and Susan Scott, all of Birch Harbor; grandchildren, Timothy and wife, Marwa, Tammy and husband, Lance, John and friend Michelle, Lisa and friend Arthur, Stephen and wife, Tracy, Joshua and wife, Megan, Crystal, Avery and wife, Stacey; great-grandchildren, Amanda, Jacob, Jessica, Joshua, Dakota, Mckenzie, Shelby, Serena, Brady, Jordyn, Blake, Grafton, Jedd, and Landan; great-great-grandson, Gabrial; step-grandchildren, Courtney and wife Melissa, Jasmine and husband, Joe, Cindy Tracy, JR, Tammy, Michael, and Bobby; step-great grandchildren, Alan, Gerald, Kaitlyn, Brooklyn, Holly, Dunovan, Xavier, and Alexia; cousins, Martha and husband James, Ronald and wife Lori; four wonderful ladies who were like daughters, LaNeta, Cindy, Nancy, and Tammy Croyt; special people, Allison, deceased, Ron and wife Nancy, deceased, Jillaine, Cheryl, Craig, Joyce, Larry and wife, Phyllis, dear wife Florence Dinsmore, Maxine, Michelle, Bill, Nicole, Elijah, Benjamin, and Elizabeth.
