[2455] Samuel ruled as Tsar, recapturing Serbia and northern Bulgaria for the new Bulgarian Empire and extending his power south to Thessaly. In 1014 he was defeated at Belasitsa by Emperor Basil II (surnamed Bulgaroktonos) who put out the eyes of 15,000 prisoners taken in the fight. "Samuel died of grief. He became sole ruler of Bulgaria in 987. He proclaimed himself Tsar in 997. Tsar of Bulgaria between 997 and 1014. He conquered Diocleia, Trebinje and Zahumlje, and made Bosnia and Raska (Serbia) vassals of Bulgaria. He died on 6 October 1014 in Prilep, Macedonia. Basil II of Byzanitum had been a long-time rival. At long last, the tides of war had turned in favor of Basil, and he sent a defeated Bulgarian army of 15,000 men back to Samuel, blind.
