[36052] "Porter" is in the 1850 federal census at Aurora, Hancock Co., ME in the family of Joseph Giles (age 61) and wife Susan (age 51), both parents b. in ME. The 1870 federal census lists him and wife Roxana with children Eliza E. (age 14), Ada E. (10) and Andy E. (1). The 1900 fedral census lists him as widowed. Ancestry.com offers: "Giles Name Meaning - English and French: from a medieval personal name of which the original form was Latin Aegidius (from Greek aigidion 'kid', 'young goat'). This was the name of a 7th-century Provençal hermit, whose cult popularized the name in a variety of more or less mutilated forms: Gidi and Gidy in southern France, Gil(l)i in the area of the Alpes-Maritimes, and Gil(l)e elsewhere. This last form was taken over to England by the Normans, but by the 12th century it was being confused with the Germanic names Gisel, a short form of Gilbert, and Gilo, which is from Gail (as in Gaillard). Irish: adopted as an Anglicized equivalent of Gaelic Ó Glaisne, a County Louth name, based on glas 'green', 'blue', 'gray'."

[10691] Reference: "Medieval English Ancestors of Certain Americans," Carl Boyer III (Santa Clarita, CA, 2001), p. 67. Hugh was summoned as Lord Despencer 14 Dec 1264 and was Chief Justiciar of England and a leader of the baronial party - and was killed at Evesham in August, 1265{- he had a grandfather of the same name who was sherrif of Salop and Staffordshire under King Henry III, and he had both a son and grandson named Hugh who figured largely in the struggles of Kings Edward II & III - see Burke's "Dormant Peerages" (London, 1883, pp. 165-66.)} The second Sir Hugh was Earl of Winchester (1322-26) and was executed by Mortimer's party 27 Oct 1326 at Bristol at age 64. The third Sir Hugh married the eldest of the Clare heiresses (and thereby received part of the Gloucester holdings); he was executed late in November, 1336 at Hereford for assisting Edward II to elude the Marcher barons. See "Edward II," Harold F. Hutchison (N.Y.: Stein and Day, 1972). Carr P. Collins, Jr., "Royal Ancestors of Magna Charta Barons" (Dallas: 1959), p. 78, identifies him as son of Thomas le Despencer and states that Sir Hugh is of Loughborough, Burton, Freely, Arnesby, Parlington, Hillam, Ryhall, Belmesthorp, Rutland, Sibsey and Aukborough, was a Knight, Constable of Horston, Devizes, Oxford, Orford, Nottingham Castles and the Tower of London, Justiciar of England; was born about 1223 and slain at the Battle of Evesham on 08-04-1265; married about 1260 Aline Basset, heiress of Wycombe, Compton-Basset and Woolton-Basset. Aline Basset m. (2) Roger Bigod; she is dau. of Sir Philip Basset of Wycombe, Bucks, Justiciar, and Hawise, dau. of Sir Matthew de Louvaine of Little Easton, Essex. NOTE: It appears that his father is a son of Thomas named Hugh le Despencer, b. ca. 1197 at Ryhall, Rutlandshire, died 23 Feb 1238, wife unknown. Homer Beers James states "He died in 1265, slain fighting for Simon de Montfort at Evesham." Cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugh_le_Despencer,_1st_Baron_le_Despencer.

[50508] "Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine], 28 April 2022": "Winterport - Carolyn M. Grant, 92, of Winterport, died peacefully at home on April 27, 2022. Carolyn grew up on a farm in East Bethel, Maine, daughter of Leslie A. and Bernice Haines Noyes. She was a graduate of Gould Academy and earned a bachelor's degree in home economics followed by a master's degree in elementary education, both from the University of Maine. In addition to teaching school, she was a Girl Scout leader, Maine Master Gardener and Sunday school teacher. Carolyn instilled her love of nature and gardening in all who spent time with her. She loved taking walks in the woods and fields surrounding her house and answering questions about the natural world. Carolyn's children and grandchildren feel a special connection to nature after being inspired by her endless knowledge and passion for it. She wrote about nature and gardening and occasionally published her work. Carolyn enjoyed birdwatching, identifying animal tracks, and collecting and identifying specimens of wild plants such as ferns, mosses and fungi. She grew a wide variety of fruits, vegetables and indoor plants and propagated wildflowers and trees from seeds she gathered. Carolyn was an expert seamstress who sewed all her own clothes and a number of quilts, including several for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with wildlife scenes of her own design. As a former educator and avid reader, Carolyn promoted the importance of education by gifting her granddaughters with college tuition. Carolyn is survived by her husband of 68 years, Conrad Grant; her daughters and sons-in-law, Priscilla and Marty Jackson, who lovingly cared for her in her last years, Alice Grant and Matthew Faulkner, and Elsie Grant and Michael Karweit; three granddaughters, Mandy, Courtney and Marcy; and four great-grandchildren, Simon, James, Danny and Vincent. She is also survived by her sister, Marilyn R. Noyes Mollicone; a niece, Nina; and nephew, Phillip."
