"News-Journal [Mansfield, Ohio]," 1 January 1947, p. 11: "Thirty years ago this morning, a small boy made his indignant, protesting entry into the world at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Glen Armold, who then lived at 154 Sturges avenue. That young son and heir, later named Richard Dean, became the third member of the Armold household just three minutes after midnight while the bells still were ringing out in celebration of the new year. He was the first baby born in Mansfield in 1917. The gay and auspicious atmosphere of that hour has followed young Armold through the intervening years. Today he is an attorney for the Land Title Guaranty Trust company of Cleveland, a more-than-ordinarily responsible job for a man who has just turned 30. YOUNG ARMOLD WAS A healthy, robust baby. 'He even escaped most of the usual childhood diseases,' his mother recalls. There seemed to be always something a little 'special' about things that happened Richard. He was baptized in the First Presbyterian church with water from the River Jordan and is still a good Presbyterian, according to Mrs. Armold. 'He decided when he was 12 that he wanted to be a lawyer,' his mother remembers, 'and he has never changed his mind. I think perhaps it was because we took him to a trial when he was 12. He was so intensely interested and fell so much in love with the judge that he decided right then and thete he was going to study law. And then, too, he was leader of his neighborhood gang and always liked to settle their disputes.' FROM GRADE SCHOOL AT Carpenter, young Armold went with his chums to Mansfield Senior high school. There he continued his avid interest in books and indulged in all the high school sports and social events. 'He liked to dance and he sang in the a cappella choir and even played the saxophone in the high school band,' Mrs. Armold said. 'His interest in sports he carried with him over into Wooster college, where he played football. Although he didn't major in history, he continued his interest in it and because he had read so much when a boy, I suppose, he found himself with a major status in that, although he hadn't really gone after it.' AFTER HE HAD RECEIVED his BA degree at Wooster, he entered the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, where for one year he delved into the intricacies of corporation law. He then matriculated at Western Reserve university to receive at the end of three years his LLB degree. He was about to enter service, Mrs. Armold said, when his job with the Republic Steel was frozen and he remained there under government jurisdiction during 1943, 44 and 45. A little more than a year ago he entered the employ of the Cleveland firm with which he is now connected. A year ago he married Miss Ruth Buchanan of Pulaski, Pa. She will come to Mansfield with her husband today to celebrate with Dr. and Mrs. Armold at their home, 755 Andover road, not only New Year's day, but the 30th birthday anniversary of the Armolds' child."

Charles held several town offices in Penobscot, ME and was county sheriff. He was the last to represent the town in the General Court of Massachusetts and the first to do so in the General Court of Maine (1826). He was a school teacher and town clerk. His 16 children are listed in "Hugh Hutchins of Old England" (Baltimore: Gateway Press, 1984),pp. 722-3. He and wife Sarah are buried in the Hutchins-Snowman Cemetery off routes 175 and 199 up from Hoyt Hutcins' house. An extensive article about Charles by Mark E. Honey is in "Castine Patriot" (Castine, ME), 8 July 2010, p. 5:
"Charles Hutchins of Penobscot was taken ill very suddenly while sitting at court, in the old County Courthouse, on Bridge Hill, Ellsworth (the building closest to the Surry Road), on August 27, 1845. He complained of feeling very badly, and was taken to the 'Public House in the Village,' where he called for something to take, tasted it, handed it back, and died instantly. He was just 58 years, 10 months, and 24 days old.
"Hutchins was born in Penobscot on October 3, 1786, in the second generation of Hutchins to be born in the Bagaduce River valley. He shared in the hardships and privations endured by the first generation that settled there. He attended school from four to six weeks a year, and with a quick and powerful natural intellect, and a very studious mind, qualified and took charge of a primary school at 19. He would pursue teaching for much of the remainder of his life.
"Quoting from Scripture, a friend called Charles 'one of the sweet singers of Israel.' He took a supreme delight in his responsibilities, and a very few could equal him in arithmetic. He advanced into the higher branches of mathematics, especially algebra, which he excelled in, despite no formal training. With his description reaching towards the sky, his friend stated that 'he was a self-made man, and could have had the faculties which our youth now generally have; could he had had some fostering hand to encourage, and lead him along the pathway of science, he would have shown among the brightest constellations that ever illuminated the Western Hemisphere.'
"Charles was elected a representative to the General Court, in Boston, in 1819, and after Maine achieved statehood in 1820, represented Penobscot, and surrounding towns before the Maine State Legislature. He was elected in 1820, 1821, 1823, 1825, 1826, 1828 and 1844. In 1829, we was placed on the Governor's Council, and in 1830 and 1831, served in the Maine Senate. He was high sheriff of Hancock County from 1831 to 1835 and in 1839. In all of these offices, 'he filled with ability and almost universal satisfaction to his consituents.' 'And there has been scarcely a year since he was eligible to any public office, that he has not filled some office in town, and often those of greatest importance and generally with satisfaction to his townsmen.'
"He was a Democrat in his political principles, a follower of Andrew Jackson, and he was ready to talk, or act these principles out, as he understood them, respectfully, and regardless of the hear or favor of men. In private life, he was cheerful and 'interesting in colloquial conversation, and none could be melancholy or low-spirited in his presence. He was firm and fervent in his attachment to his intimate friends, and generous to his enemies.'
"'Strictly a conscientious man, neither fear nor favor, frowns nor flateries, nor the threats of his opposers, when he knew it was in their power to injure him in pecuniary interests, could ever make him swerve on the path his judgment and conscience marked out for him to pursue. He was ever ready, according to his ability, to help the distressed, and to support the benevolent institutions and enterprises of philanthropy and religiou. He was a tenderly affectionate husband; the provident and indulgent father; the dutiful and respectful son; and loving and well-loved brother.'
"The body of Charles Hutchins was carried home from Ellsworth, and after being laid out in his home, was buried with very appropriate funeral services, while the flag of his country was raised half-mast by a sympathizing public. The friend closes with these words: '...he was a praying man; and we hope rests in peace.'
"Hutchins was perhaps serving as sheriff of Hancock County when he died. He was also town clerk of Penobscot for many years, and the last to represent the town before the General Court at Boston.
