[14548] "The Bethel Courier [Bethel, Vermont], 1 October 1891," p. 4: "In the death of Reuben Whitcomb our town has lost a well known and respected citizen. He was born on Whitcomb Hill and spent most of his life on the old home stead. He was a member of a family of four sons and three daughters. His sister, Mrs. Merrick Gay, is the only survivor. He reached a great age, 85 years. He and his wife passed their golden wedding day thirteen years ago. Seldom do we see a couple spared to each other 63 years always united in sympathy and love growing more dear to each other as the years brought their cares and burdens. He lived an industrious and faithful life, making the world the richer and better for his passing thro' it. He filled every relation in life well - a devoted husband, a loving father and kind neighbor. Three children were born to him. Only one son, Elbridge, survives him. His wife and three generations sorrow that they shall see his venerable face no more. His death touches a large circle of relatives and friends. Nearly 30 years he and his wife lived in the old home in the White River Valley and there he closed his eyes in their last sleep. In his family one has lived more than 50 yrs., she ministering to them and they ministering to her, having grown old together and cheered by the same great hope. In that old home where he had welcomed his friends and neighbors and where they had received his parting blessing the funeral services were held, conducted by Rev. S. A. Parker assisted by Rev.T. S. Hubbard, an old-time friend of the family. His body was tenderly laid beside his two children in the cemetery at Stockbridge Common."
Christina Straub in "Straubs, Smiths and Extended Family" on rootsweb.com in 2007 states "Capt. Zephaniah Willhide, was born on his father's farm less than a mile from Thurmont, Frederick Co., Md. About 1838, he came to Perry County, PA. He was a millwright which trade he learned. He was a joiner of great skill and precision, and engaged in that work for many years after he turned his attention to farming. In 1850 he bought the farm of his father-in-law, Solomon Shiively, and moved there that year from the tannery property where he has formerly lived. He owned and lived upon the farm till 1901 and managed it till his advacing age prevented. For a number of years before he sold the farm. Both of his wives, being sisters, were born upon this farm. Zephaniah and his second wife Catharine were married fiifty years.
"The entire family belonged to the Methodist church at New Germantown, Perry Co., PA.
"Zephaniah never saw actual service in time of war, yet he served as 'commissioned, Captain of the Montgomery Cadets of the Uniformed Militia of Commonweath of Pennsylvania, in the 3rd Brigade of the Fifteenth Division of the Counites of Cumberland, Perry and Franklin.' His first commission was issued by Wm. F. Johnston, Governor of PA., April 26, 1851, the second by Wm. Bigler, Governor of PA., Sept 7, 1854. At the time of his first enrollment of PA Volunteers, he was training the Montgomery Cadets, and had just two months till he would be past the age limit. Before the draft was made, his limit had expired and his company went into service under another officer.
"Both wives are buried at New Germantown, Perry Co., PA.
"Historical Newspapers, Altoona Mirror, March 30, 1906, Captain Zephaniah Willhide father of A. R.
