[862] Captured by American Indians 11 August 1676 with his mother and siblings, redeemed by his grandfather (Anthony Brackett, with whom he resided for several years), an orphan with no property or prospects, Joshua became one of the richest men of the Province of Maine in his time. His grandparents were staunch Episcopalians and reared him to be a cultured and literate man. He served four weeks as a soldier at Oyster River (Durham), New Hampshire in 1697 and again off and on in the wars of 1701-1715 (and was Lt. of the local militia). He owned coastal vessels, a saw mill and farms (stretching for miles along the southern shore of the Great Bay). {-"Brackett Genealogy," Herbert I. Brackett (Washington, D.C., 1907), Chapter VII; "One Hundred and Sixty Allied Families".} NEHGR 39:235 states he and Mary "had in 1712 eight children baptized in Greenland: John, Joshua, Thomas, Samuel, Anthony, Mary, Abigail, Elinor." James W. ("Jim") Wheaton (tradrjim@gte.net) stated via email 9 May 2000 that he descends from Joshua and Mary through a son, James ("The Peacemaker," b. 1715) - thence through Lt. Joseph (b. 14 July 1740), James (b. 31 March 1782 in Greenland, NH), Charles (b. 1825 in Cherry Valley, NY) Rose Anna (m. W. J. Williams), Fred C. Williams, Rosanna Brackett Williams (m. James S. Wheaton; Jim's parents). See "Brackett Genealogy, Descendants of Anthony Brackett of Portsmouth and Captain Richard Brackett of Braintree. With Biographies of the Immigrant Fathers, Their Sons, and Others of Their Posterity," Herbert Ierson Brackett (1907), Chapter VII.
